Last week, a group of people and I who swim at the Rec Center spoke to the City Council. We spoke about how the equipment at the pools seemed to take forever to get fixed. I want to thank all those people who testified at that meeting and wanted to thank the City Council for their time... more
First I will start by saying I find it hard to read anything in Brown’s opinion regarding the NFL that was in good taste or non-defamatory and not to mention non-offensive. The illustration itself was insensitive on so many levels that disgusting will not begin to describe it... more
Hello. My name is Zachary Bray, and I am writing in regard to our Confederate memorial. I am not an activist nor do I hold any political clout. I am only a high school graduate and pipe fitter, but I am very concerned about the issue I am going to speak on. First and foremost I am a proud American citizen who served honorably in our United States Navy for eight years. I love our country so much I cannot express the love i feel with words... more
Since 2014 the government of France has been awarding their highest medal, the Legion of Honor to veterans that fought to liberate France during the Second World War. Many veterans worldwide have now received this great honor but many veterans may not even know it is available. ... more
My husband and I, along with our pug - Miss Lily - are daily walkers along Rock Creek. We enter through Lone Oak Cemetery and enjoy peace and tranquility walking along the water, stopping to enjoy any wildlife that we see and even taking pictures. While on our walk Monday May 22, we noticed a Blue Heron on the other side of the creek that was tethered to a string and could not fly away. ... more
Columbia Polk Association wants to remove President Polk and Sarah from their graves of 124 years and plant them in the 11th President’s, daddy’s backyard. Let the Polk family stay in their graves of honor and respect on the Tennessee State Capitol Hill instead of being used as “tools for tourism.”... more
Recently, I was in need of prompt medical attention, so I chose the Marshall Medical Center. I was greeted by a friendly clerk and immediately triaged by ER staff and guided to waiting where the wait was only fifteen minutes until I was escorted to a private examination room. Almost immediately the doctor came in, paid attention to left knee, ordering lab tests and x-rays... more
If I asked you who said the following, minus the federal references, you might think it was Governor Haslam: “So, what we’re proposing is to add the equivalent of five cents per gallon to the existing federal highway user fee, the gas tax. That hasn’t been increased for the last 23 years. ... more
As we enter the start of a new Congress and a new Administration, I will be looking for leaders on Capitol Hill to maintain our progress in the fight to end Alzheimer’s because we cannot afford to lose any ground. Person with the disease (intro/background): I am advocating as a family member and friend to the estimated 5 million Americans and estimated 110,000 Tennesseans that are living with, and I believe that our state and nation face no public health issue more critical than Alzheimer’s disease. ... more
We were having a terrific legislative update and community meeting. Our room at the Perry County Chamber was full of constituents—young and old. Chamber Executive Director, Will Nunley, had decided to live stream the conversation via Facebook. Simple task, fool proof, he thought. ... more
Adult learners in Tennessee currently have a great opportunity for assistance in returning to school. As part of Governor Haslam’s “Drive to 55” initiative, Tennessee Reconnect gives those wanting to return to some type of post-secondary school opportunities not only for financial aid, but for one on one advising. ... more
Ms. Brown, I am truly disappointed in your recent article titled, “Democrats’ post-election temper-tantrums continue.” Though I gritted my teeth through your first sentence, I was right back with you throughout the next few paragraphs. You could have had me on your side... that is until you started your rant on the “size” of the crowd at the Women’s March... more
Lately, we, the common folk, have been flooded with political opinions from Hollywood's elite, as if their views should be endorsed because famous entertainers are smarter than we. These actors should understand that most of us pay money to buy tickets at the cinema because the actors usually portray characters who represent normal people struggling in the real world, like us. ... more
To the Editor: This Friday past, we lost one of the fiercest Tigers of the 1984 AA Football Championship team. After defeating White House and Brentwood Academy on the road, the Tigers traveled west to play a favored Milan football team. As the Tigers departed the bus, a player or fan of Milan asked where we got our "pygmy n......." (aka Petey Allen). This racial epithet permeated throughout the entire team. From the very beginning the Tigers absolutely destroyed a good Milan football team... more
My name is Billy Cook. This email was sent to me after the Marshall County High-Knoxville Central two weeks ago. I just received it because of an address error. You can publish it if you so choose. It shows the appreciation from the grandparents of one of the Knox Central cheerleaders. The grandparents are Randy and Judy Pyne... more
The Marshall County Branch NAACP would like to thank each and everyone that came to the Town Hall/School Board Meeting Jan. 21. We would also like to thank those of you who asked or turned in questions. Sometimes you may have to stand alone. Nevertheless we encourage you to stand. Stand for what matters to you and what's important. Yes Mr. Keny told Pres. Davis on Saturday morning that he would not be in attendance on Saturday afternoon... more
To the editor: I am often tempted to respond to issues I read in the "Trib" (too often, to some peoples' thinking, I'm sure) when it is extensively covered that some particular organization or group thinks one of our "elected" governmental boards, commission, or council, etc., must do as the proffering entity desires ("directs")... more
To the editor: Regarding your front-page article "Absent board sparks outrage," I am compelled to respond with an alternate headline: "Board members outraged by accusation of apathy." Since my appointment and consequent election, I have returned every single phone call and responded to every single person who has written, e-mailed or stopped me in the grocery store to express concerns about our school system. ... more
To the editor: I'd like to respond to the Letter to the Editor in Oct. 14th's paper. I would like to say that I agree with everything Mrs. Reese had to say. I would also like to add that I am the sister of Brenda Beatty, who was a prime candidate for the Clerk and Master position. ... more
