Woman accused in Poteete murder

Criminal homicide and arson charges were filed and a Lewisburg woman was arrested Friday as a result of a city police and a state agent's investigation in to the death of a Lewisburg carpenter during the early morning hours of Tuesday, Aug. 14.

Accused in the death of John Poteete is Heather Rene McCullum, (previously Rogers), 22, of Woodlawn Street. She was named by Wesley Poteete, the victim's brother, and by Lewisburg Police and a senior county lawman. She made statements against her interests, Police Detective Capt. David Henley said Friday evening.

McCullum was married in June when she changed her name from Rogers.

John Poteete's burned body was found in his Franklin Street home as a result of a 4 a.m. fire call on Tuesday.

Police told Poteete's family about the arrest while they were at London Funeral Home, several blocks from the crime scene where a state bomb and arson agent, Russell Robinson, continued to investigate with Henley, city Detective James Johnson, and other officers Friday evening.

"He was laying in bed and she stabbed him and poured gas on him to burn his body," Wesley Poteete said. "We don't know why."

Asked if police have a motive, Henley replied, "We're working on it."

While Rogers was named by the victim's brother and confirmed by two lawmen, McCullum's booking information and its display on the county jail's website are among the last tasks during the arrest process.

"To me," the victim's brother said Friday evening, "I'm at peace with it. The Lord will take care of it."

He said McCullum confessed, and another individual said police have a "signed confession."
