The state recognized a Lewisburg manufacturer this month for a commitment to safety that has spanned years.
Steve Hawkins, assistant commissioner with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development responsible for the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration, presented the safety team at WestRock with a Tennessee STAR award at their Garrett Parkway plant.
The STAR award (Safety Through Accountability and Recognition) is the state’s highest award for workplace safety.
Hawkins emphasized the efforts of WestRock safety team for “promoting effective safety and health management” in the plant for years.
“The people sitting at the table make the difference,” he said.
Hawkins pointed out that the plant was 36 percent below the state average for days missed due to workplace injury.
The Lewisburg facility was the first recipient of the Volunteer STAR award in 1997 and has maintained that recognition ever since, receiving the award four other times.
There are 35 other sites in Tennessee currently recognized with the award.
WestRock has 108 employees in Lewisburg, manufacturing corrugated boxes.
