NASHVILLE – Tennessee State Parks is accepting applications for a six-week Girls in Science program this spring at Henry Horton State Park. The program is designed for 6-8th grade girls who show an interest in science.
Registration is available to students in Maury, Marshall and Bedford counties. The program runs from April 11-May 16 and will consist of weekly sessions on Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. at the park. Each session will be led by a professional female working in a field of science, including staff from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The sessions will involve hands-on learning activities in both indoor and outdoor environments.
An optional overnight campout on May 23-24 will also be held at the park, led by a Tennessee State Parks Ranger.
Cost for student participation is $75, which includes six weeks of sessions, snacks, certificate of completion, gear and supplies required for the program. A separate $25 fee would apply to the optional overnight campout. Partial scholarships may be available based on need.
The process for participation includes a student application, a parent application and letters of recommendations from a teacher and an additional adult. A total of 20 participants will be selected.
