Only 13 brave MGA golfers signed up to play in the 2nd Annual Three-Club Tournament on Sunday at
Saddle Creek Golf Club and in the end, the team of Travis Darnell, Jason Lopes, and Roger Harwell prevailed with a slick eight-under score.
Don Wilson was added as the fourth player on the team in a blind draw before the event began.
Leading the way
Harwell led the way, shooting a six-over score in a points-game format that awarded players a certain amount of strokes based on their United States Golf Association handicap index.
The win was the second in a row for the red-hot Harwell, who had just come off a victory in the net division of the Club Championship earlier this month.
The event challenges the player's imagination
and shot-making skills as they are only allowed to use three of the 14 golf clubs in their bag throughout the round and they are not allowed to change the combination or share clubs at any point in the match.
Runners-up
Finishing in second place at 13-under was the team of Joey Morefield, John Lambert, and Chuck Forbis.
In third place with a 19-under total was the team consisting of Anthony Puca, Michael Davis, and Don Wilson.
Bringing up the rear was the foursome of Eddie Wiles, Buddy Tankersley, Steve Bowden, and Jack Freeland.
Closest to pin
Lambert won closest to the pin and a piece of the deuce pot with a birdie on the par-3 seventh hole, while Wiles won the only other deuce pot award with a birdie on the fifth hole.
Other closest-to-the-pin winners were Lopes on
number 17, Bowden on 13, and Davis on number five.
The final MGA event of the season is the two-day Summer Hummer, or member-guest tournament, that will take place on Aug. 24 and 25.
