Funeral services for Joe Leonard “Doc” Irwin, 94, of Shelbyville, will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, in the chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Pastor Alex Hoffner officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Mr. Irwin passed from this life Oct. 8, 2019, at home with family by his side.
Visitation with the family will be Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
A native of the Wheel community in Bedford County, Doc was born July 23, 1925, to the late Joe Vecey and Mary Elizabeth Darnell Irwin and is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Lawwell Irwin; daughter, Vickie Lee Haynes; and brother, Glendon Irwin.
He was retired from Shelbyville Power Water and Sewage Systems after 25 years of employment and previously he, he worked for Dixie Service Station, where he earned the nickname “Doc”. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, in the Pacific Theater. He was a longtime member of the Christ Lutheran Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie (Archie) McKoon of Shelbyville; sister, Catherine Smith of AL; and brother, Bill (Melba) Irwin of Lobelville.
