This year the guest speaker is 1997 Miss America, Tara Dawn Christensen.
After a long journey, Tara Dawn Christensen was honored to be crowned Miss Kansas 1996 and Miss America 1997. She has been interviewed on a number of television shows, including “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “Inside Edition,” the “Today” show, “Fox News Sunday,” and many others. She also played a cameo role on “The Nanny.” Tara has been seen in magazines such as People, Reader’s Digest, TV Guide, and as the Parade cover story, to name a few. She has released two CDs and performed as a vocal soloist for President George W. Bush’s largest inaugural ball.
Tara graduated from Florida State University and the University of Missouri - Kansas City with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in choral music education. She has been honored to serve as spokesperson for several public service campaigns and charitable organizations during and after her year of service, including Children’s Miracle Network, the National Institute for Literacy, Wycliffe Bible Translators, the Library of Congress, First Priority of America, and the National Abstinence Clearinghouse. After relinquishing her crown, Tara’s career turned more toward speaking opportunities on abstinence and various faith-based settings. Her speaking and singing engagements have taken her around the globe and throughout every corner of the United States.
After meeting on an airplane on Valentine’s Day 1997, Tara married former Congressman Jon Christensen in 1998. These days, Tara stays much closer to home, where she helps Jon in their two businesses and stays very active in their church and community. Jon and Tara have been blessed with two daughters, Petra Dawn (age 10) and Sela Grace (age 6), and the family lives in Nashville, Tennessee.
