n the middle of winter a gardener's thoughts will turn to the spring and new growth.

A local group hopes to plant a seed this January which will bloom into a revived garden club for Lewisburg.

The club will hold their first, organizational meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. in the UT Extension conference room located in the Hardison Annex building at 230 College St.

For the upcoming year, the group will meet in the same location on every second Tuesday of the month.

"We want to invite everyone to join," said Brenda Newman, president of the new club. "Everyone can benefit from a beautiful garden."

Monthly meetings will feature speakers on a variety of garden related subjects, not only plants but related subjects as diverse as composting and soil or birds and butterflies.

Newman said that the variety was intentional. They wanted to cover all of the aspects of gardening, not just focus on flowers.

The group has been working for several months planning for the upcoming year, and wants to be an educational resource rather than solely a social gathering.

They would also like to identify a community project in the county to volunteer with for their first year.

Lewisburg has had a garden club in the past, but it has been several years since one was active in the community.

"We want to learn how make your yard and garden as beautiful as possible," said Newman. "It all starts somewhere."
