The Forrest Lady Rockets got an early scare from the Cascade Lady Champions before dispensing of them in a 13-2 five inning run-rule win in Wartrace Tuesday night, clinching the District 9-A regular season title.
The Lady Rockets have won every district title this decade and a victory over Community tonight will cap off a five-year unbeaten stretch versus league opponents.
Shelby Stinnett is on the threshold of never allowing an earned run versus a district foe if she can blank the Viqueens at the Field of Dreams in Chapel Hill tonight.
"Nothing earned again," said Forrest head coach Becky Cheatham after the game. "Shelby has not given up an earned run to a district opponent in five years thanks to her intensity, a great defense behind her and a lot of offense over the years that has given her the confidence."
The Lady Rockets got an unearned of their own in the top of the first when Chelsea Johnson led off and reached base on a Lady Champ miscue at shortstop.
Johnson would go to second on a fielder's choice, scamper to third on a passed ball and run across the dish on an infield single by Rachel Curtis.
The Lady Champs scored both of their unearned runs in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-1 lead on the Lady Rockets.
"I wasn't pleased with our defense in the second inning," said FHS Cheatham. "We should not have given up two runs. We need to fix that kind of stuff."
Forrest tied the game in the second inning, beginning with a leadoff single to center by Caitlyn Rotchford.
Kaitlin Toombs came in to run for the FHS catcher and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Herron.
Toombs would score on a throwing error by Cascade, tying the game at 2.
Cascade got a one-out triple in the bottom of the second by Katlin Eddy before Stinnett stranded her there, bowing up and getting the next two batters out on a strikeout and a ground ball to first baseman Whitney Stofel.
The Lady Rockets broke through with five runs on six hits in the top of the third with Adrean Jordan getting the big blow on a two-run single.
Cascade went down 1-2-3 in the home half of the 3rd and the Lady Rockets added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a clutch two-run single by Rotchford with two outs.
Stinnett was grooving in the circle in the home half and bing-bing-bing went the Lady Champs.
Forrest broke out the heavy lumber in the top of the fifth, sending eight batters to the plate, tallying four more runs to make it a 13-2 ballgame.
Stofel, Ciara Cook, Johnson, and Curtis all scored in the inning and Jordan hit the left field fence for an RBI double.
Curtis came to the circle in the bottom of the fifth and finished off the Lady Champs for the title clinching victory.
Rotchford led the FHS offensive output, going 3-4 with 2 RBI's, Jordan had 4 RBI's in a 2-3 performance at the dish, Curtis had 2 hits in four at bats with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored, and Ciara Cook was 2-3 with an RBI and 1 one scored.
Forrest will open up District 9-A Tournament play at the Field of Dreams on Thursday night at 5:30 pm.
