It seems as though everywhere you look you will see a fireworks tent this week. Ever wonder why people sell fireworks or what their biggest sellers are?
The Fireworks Supermarket is a tent owned and operated by two local families, the McQueens and the Moffetts. Both families began selling fireworks as part of the Tiger Booster Club 10 years ago. The booster club stopped selling fireworks after four years. The two families enjoyed selling the fireworks and decided they would continue on their own and have continued to every summer for the past six years.
When asked which fireworks are the best sellers Angie Moffett said it varies depending on the customer.
"The kids' packs with the sparklers are very popular. The men like the artillery packs, because they like to blow stuff up! And the women, they love anything with colors," said Moffett.
When asked what her favorite firework is she replied, "The Crazy-Excited. It bursts from two different levels and it has lots of color."
Big D's Fireworks has been operating in Lewisburg now for over eight years and can be found in two different locations. The booth located on West Commerce can be seen year round. The tent located on Ellington Parkway can only be seen during the Fourth of July season.
Big D's Fireworks is owned by local man Dennis Salway, also known as Big D. Big D is a nickname given to Dennis for driving the church van. According to his employees, he looks just like his cartoon image in their advertisements.
"Our biggest sellers are bottle rockets, everyone loves bottle rockets, but the Excalibur, well, that's the hottest item of the season," said a longtime employee when asked what their biggest sellers are.
The tent located in the parking lot of Walmart is a fundraising project operated by the First Assembly of God church.
This year they are raising money for an upcoming mission trip.
