A Marshall County Jail corrections officer was treated and released at a Nashville hospital Sunday as a result of a two-car collision between his patrol car and a sedan, the investigating officer said that night.
Transport Officer Justin Christmas was flown by an Air Evac helicopter ambulance from the crash scene on U.S. Highway 431 (Fayetteville Highway) where the cruiser he was driving collided with a black Oldsmobile Alero, officials said.
The deputy "was talking and alert" at the scene before he was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper John Judge said.
Jessica Christmas was driving the Alero, Judge said. Another official confirmed the woman's name and the charge.
"There was a relationship between the two of them," Judge said of the drivers who are divorced. "That's what they said; divorced," the trooper stated.
She was arrested on a charge of driving when her license is suspended, Judge said. "He was cited for violation of the due care law."
Motorists are to exercise due care while driving on the public highways, the trooper said, reading aloud from a manual. Judge had consulted with Assistant District Attorney Chris Collins before citing the transport officer to a Jan. 9 appearance before Marshall County General Sessions Court Judge Lee Bussart Bowles.
The Alero passengers were a boy, a girl and a man. The boy and the man suffered minor injuries and papers were signed indicating that they declined transportation by a Marshall County Emergency Medical Service ambulance,
The collision was at Belfast Hill.
"Both were going north," Judge said. "She was in the fast lane and he was in the slow lane. For some reason he entered her lane."
The Alero collided with the patrol car where an image of the department's star-shaped badge is on one of the doors, the trooper said.
Both vehicles came to rest off the southbound lane of the highway, Judge said.
The collision was at about 3:30 p.m. Neither vehicle was drivable Sunday night. The Alero was towed the Brown & Son Auto Center. The 2011 Ford Crown Victoria was towed to the Sheriff's Department and locked in the county's metal storage building on First Avenue North at Water Street.
At 9:15 a.m., the Sheriff's Department issued the following statement.
"On Sunday, December 11, 2011 at approximately 3:30 P.M., the transport officer from the Marshall County Sheriff's Office was involved in a wreck. After the transport officer's ex-wife picked up the children both vehicles were traveling North on Highway 431 when they collided. The accident is being investigated by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The final results of the wreck have not been released to the Marshall County Sheriff. The transport officer was transported to Vanderbilt Hospital but was released later in the evening with minor injuries."
