Cornersville board considers investment offers

The Cornersville Mayor and Board of Aldermen took some time to consider what additions they’d like to see made to the town at their monthly meeting last Thursday.

Local resident Greg Sachs informally discussed potential projects to gauge the board’s interest, following on from prior discussions he had with Mayor Melisa Peters.

A 10-year resident of the area, Sachs, who has had a long career in capital management and investment, purchased the Tennessean Truck Stop two years ago.

Sachs said that he was considering additional investment in the town but wanted input on what could be most beneficial.

“I wanted to figure out the best way to be impactful,” he said.

He threw out several ideas, including a grocery store adjacent to the truck stop, single family home development, a tiny house rental development, or a commercial strip development.

“Does everyone feel comfortable with me moving ahead with studies?” he asked the aldermen.

Aldermen were receptive to the ideas presented, offering feedback on several.

“Everything you’ve brought forth sounds like a win-win for the public and the town and for you,” said Alderman Mary Johnson.

The town’s planning commission has spent months updating local planning regulations and guidelines.

Due to the scope of the work, a public work session will be held on Monday, Sept. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Cornersville Church of Christ annex to present the changes in the zoning regulations to the aldermen and to any residents who are interested. The board will vote to adopt the changes at a future monthly board meeting.

Matt Fox, recently appointed as chief of the Cornersville Volunteer Fire Department, briefed the board on his department’s roster. The department is up to 15 members since Fox took over, he said, in part from South Marshall VFD members joining the Cornersville department as well. Fox also serves as chief of South Marshall.

Angie Thomason had been selected as assistant chief, Fox noted.
