You never know what you might find when cleaning out a home after many decades.
Employees of a real estate firm were cleaning out an attic at a home in Belfast last week when they came across some items which looked suspicious.
Calling in the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, they discovered that they had unpacked old blasting caps and a vial of nitroglycerin that had been stored in the attic, probably for decades.
A statement from the department said that the caps were of the type that could have been bought at hardware stores for clearing stumps prior to 1955.
The nitroglycerin had crystallized over time, making it even more unstable.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Bomb Squad responded in order to deal with the explosives.
They were loaded into the center of a roll of hay on the bomb squad’s trailer, and, with an escort from deputies and the Lewisburg Police Department, taken to the Rogers Group quarry in Lewisburg and safely detonated.
