Lewisburg's La Leche League will host its annual "Big Latch On" picnic at the Lewisburg Recreation Center this Saturday, Aug. 3, at 10:30 a.m.

La Leche League is an international nonprofit organization that helps provides information and support to breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women. The Lewisburg group was formed in the 1970s and has been meeting ever since.

The group hosts the Big Latch On as part of World Breastfeeding Week. The Big Latch On has been taking place across the country since 2005 to raise awareness of breastfeeding support in communities. Women and their families attend, and the women breastfeed their children. The event will also include food, door prizes, and kid's activities.

"We're celebrating families," local La Leche league leader Anna Childress said.

Childress has been a part of the group for 30 years. She and the group's other leader, Elizabeth Hunnicutt, remained even after their own children stopped breastfeeding.

"You meet on a mothering level, and you can pass on that information," Childress said.

The group discusses various aspects of breastfeeding, from the difficulties to the advantages. Members Robyn Arnold and Jennifer Atkins mentioned the mother-child bond of breastfeeding, as well as the environmental and health benefits. They also mentioned the importance of helpfulness of a support group.

"Your experience is going to help the next mom," Atkins said.

The La Leche League meets at 10:30 a.m. on the second Thursday and fourth Saturday of each month at Lewisburg's First Presbyterian Church.
