I had about a two-day break between the end of Babe Ruth season and the beginning of another school year in August of 2007. It had been an awesome year and big things were on the horizon.
Tiger football was back, Seth Lintz fired away on the mound and on the golf course, David Steely’s Tigerettes were on a mission, and Becky Cheatham’s Lady Rockets sent TCA packing.
This week we will talk football.

My first year was a trip, time whirled by in 2006 and before I knew it, the prep sports faucet of live games had turned off.
Things were still happening though as a prior May tour by college football coaches coming to Lewisburg to scout Marshall County’s Dont’a Hightower grew to fever pitch when Tennessee Vols coach Phillip Fulmer came and was followed by representatives from Auburn, and finally the big one when Alabama’s Nick Saban touched down in a private jet at Ellington Airport.

The Marshall County Tigerettes capped off a whirlwind winter sports season as the Class 2A state runnerup in basketball in early March of 2007, sending me outside for my favorite time of the year.
Baseball was all I wanted to know growing up.
I was one of those kids that literally slept with my baseball glove, I played all the time at the Sunset Park, and making the Nottingham Little League’s “B” League Balgowan’s Bicycle Shop team at eight years old was one of the biggest accomplishments of my early life.

For the first half of the 2006-2007 high school prep season I began to learn my trade under fire, travelling everywhere to cover games.
I was extremely motivated and was searching for games to cover, but by the end of the Christmas season I needed a break really bad.

Prep sports came to a necessary screeching halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic that encompasses most of the globe and as we wait for this world health emergency to pass, let’s take a look back in time in the history of Marshall County sports to move our minds away from our troubles, if not just for a few minutes.
First, let me give you a little background about myself so you can kind of ride along with me during this journey.

The mandated school shutdown until April 6 is hard on everyone with ACT tests delayed, not seeing all your friends, and not participating in any extracurricular activities, including all spring sporting events.
“I think for the school, obviously it takes a hit for our class, pride, and tradition,” Forrest Principal Angie Phifer said. “For not only our athletes, but for any of our extracurricular activities is kind of sad for the kids and disappointing, but hopefully this won’t last long and we can get back to it as quick as possible.”

Marshall County scored 14 points in the first quarter and the Tigerettes led by four at the end of the period before tallying just 13 more points the remainder of the game, suffering a season-ending 56-27 loss at Maplewood Comprehensive School in Saturday night’s Class 2A state sectional round.
“I didn’t coach good enough, we didn’t play well enough, and the best team won,” MCHS coach David Steely said. “It hurts, but it’s supposed to hurt and if it doesn’t hurt we weren’t practicing hard enough and didn’t have enough expectations, so this hurts today.”

“I’m pretty excited, I think it’s going to be a really good experience to continue my education and to continue my career in soccer,” Runk said. “It’s going to be really exciting, I was at every one of Jasmine’s games with it being right down the road, so having Mom and Dad and Baylor coming to see me will be very exciting.”

For the second season in a row, not being one of the top two seeds in the District 12-AA Tournament cost Forrest a chance to extend its season.
Just like last year, Forrest had to make the long trek to Dover to take on Stewart County in the Region 6-AA Tournament opener.
