Veola Mayes, 90, of Johnstown, Pa., passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Jan. 29, 1923, in Lewisburg, she was a daughter of the late James Lewis and Rachel Ann (Harney) Braden. She was a member of the NAACP and volunteered for the Kernville Committee. Veola loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Richland Church of Christ for 50 plus years. She was a former employee of Glosser Brothers, where she worked in the cafeteria before becoming a seamstress. While living in Lewisburg, she owned the Sweet Shop.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Nathaniel, James, and Louis Braden; and sisters, Geneva Angus and Martha Lee Bryant.
She is survived by a daughter, Esta Paulette Harman of Indianapolis; sisters, Annie Ruth McClain of Detroit, Thelma Morris of Johnstown, and Carol Kennedy of Detroit; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends will be received Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Richland Church of Christ 2783 Bedford St., Johnstown, Pa., where a funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m., with Pastor Joe Keefer officiating, followed by interment in Grandview Cemetery.
