The CMS Lady Bulldogs hosted intra-county rival LMS Tuesday night in Cornersville and came away with an easy 36-11 win.

First-year Cornersville coach Martha Jane McMasters is off to a great start to her new career as the Lady Bulldogs are 6-0 start to the season.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling being back here in Cornersville,” McMasters said. “I’m so excited to be here and get this opportunity.”

The Cornersville and UT Martin grad is the daughter of longtime middle school girls’ basketball coach and Assistant Principal Joy McMasters.

“I learned from the best,” McMasters said. “It’s been a whole different type of atmosphere than what I was used to, but everyone has welcomed me here with open arms.”

“It’s a lot coaching two teams, but it’s exciting and I love what I’m doing and the girls are good.”

The Lady Bulldogs and Tigerettes played to a close 9-5 first quarter before Cornersville took an 18-7 halftime lead.

“I felt like we played unselfishly tonight and we played as a team,” McMasters said. “Our post play was huge when our guards couldn’t hit tonight and I thought we pushed the ball hard all night.”

Gracie Turner, who led all scorers in the game with 13 points scored seven out of the nine points in the second period for Cornersville with Katie Powers providing the other bucket in the low post for the Lady Bulldogs.

“I’m proud of Gracie, she has worked so hard, she was hurt all summer and didn’t play with us in camp,” McMasters said. “We are going to feed it to her until somebody stops her.”

“My two post players feed off each other so well, they have started to learn how to feed off each so I am really proud of my post players.”

In the third quarter, Cornersville busted the game wide open as they outscored the Tigerettes 12-2 in the period behind a smothering defensive effort and balanced scoring attack with Jayli Childress scoring all seven of her points in the game in the stanza, while Powers had four, Turner two, and Alisha Price had one free throw.

CMS finished up the game with a 6-2 fourth period to take the win and remain unbeaten on the season.

“My five, I’m proud of them,” McMasters said. “Not just my five, my bench, they are all working so hard and I’m proud of them.”

Mashawna Ridley led the Tigerettes with five points, including one three-pointer while Madziyonna Calloway scored four points and Maggie Steely had a deuce.

“It’s not hard to get the girls excited to play Lewisburg,” McMasters said. “It’s a good feeling, we are excited to beat Lewisburg tonight.”

Cornersville will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Richland while the Tigerettes travel to Meridianville, Alabama on Tuesday.

“I’m excited, we have won six, we have 11 more to go and we go to Richland Monday night,” McMasters said. “I’m excited, it’s looking good.”
