The FMS Lady Rockets unblemished streak continued on Friday at the Field of Dreams in Chapel Hill, sweeping a doubleheader over the Spring Hill Lady Generals in a pair of exciting 5 inning contests, 2-0 and 3-2, respectively.

"They were good ballgames, they weren't pretty, but we'll take it," said FMS head coach Bunky Elmore. "We had a few things that didn't go our way, but they worked hard, we prevailed and came out on top."

One-hitters

In game one, Lainey Mays twirled a gem in the circle, giving up just one hit and striking out eight, while walking none in the complete game shutout.

Spring Hill's Lily Soverns also tossed a one-hitter in the first game, going cleat to cleat with Mays.

After two unearned runs put Soverns in a first inning hole, the Lady Generals' hurler shut the door on Forrest, allowing just three base runners the remainder of the contest.

Jordan Yelensky had the lone hit off Soverns, beating out a bunt with one out in the bottom of the third.

Winning runs

Mays had little trouble in the top of the first before the Lady Rockets managed to push the only two runs across the home dish that they would need.

Mays reached on error to begin the home half of the first inning and alertly scooted all the way to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Yelensky.

Another error on a ground ball hit by Kyleah Hengesbach scored Mays and Hengesbach ended up on second.

A 4-3 grounder by Samantha King to second moved Hengesbach to third and two pitches later, Hengesbach safely slid into home untouched on a passed ball, making it 2-0.

Sarah Usher doubled, leading off the top of the second before Mays reared back to strike out the next three Lady Generals in order.

Mays would not be severely threatened the rest of the contest and on a couple of occasions, FMS served up the leather, especially in the top of the fourth inning when leftfielder Emma Stacey made a beautiful running catch, cutting off and snaring a sure double in the left/center field gap.

In game two, FMS was the visiting team, and just like the first game, the Lady Rockets scored twice in the first inning.

Early scores

Mays beat out a bunt single to start the contest and Yelensky moved her up to second base with a perfect sacrifice bunt.

Hengesbach stepped up and drilled an RBI single that scored Mays and Hengesbach went to second on the throw home.

King made it a 2-0 ballgame with an opposite field base hit RBI before Soverns retired the next two FMS batters to end the inning.

King went to the circle for FMS and gave up a one-out bunt single to Gracyn Martin before an error on Forrest made it first and second with one out.

King proceeded to whiff the next two batters to end the threat and there was no scoring in the second inning.

Forrest threats

Mays led off the third inning with a rope double to right field and Yelensky followed with a walk.

Hengesbach drilled a shot to second that Sarah Usher snared and tossed to second for a double play.

King singled to center and Yelensky went to third on the play before the Lady Generals made a nice play on a passed ball, barely getting Yelensky out at home plate to end the inning.

Jordan Brady reached on an error to begin the bottom of the frame and Malie McGinnis hit a grounder to third that looked like a double play ball, but the throw to second sailed into center field.

Jasmine Runk alertly backed up the play and threw to Chloe Bruce at third to nail Brady and Bruce came up throwing, nailing McGinnis at second for a double play that ended the Spring Hill scoring threat.

Weird inning

After Soverns retired FMS in the top of the fourth, things got weird in the bottom of the inning.

Shelby Seacrest walked, benignly beginning the weirdness, and after King struck out the next batter, Usher singled to second to put runners on first and second.

King whiffed the next batter for out number two, but walked Cobi LaCroy to load the bases.

Soverns came up and delivered base hit to left field that scored Seacrest and

Stacey came up throwing to nail Usher at second for the third out, but the home plate umpire botched the call, allowing the second run to count on the inning ending force play.

Elmore argued the call to no avail and the game went to the fifth inning, knotted at two.

Go-ahead run

Stacey reached on a one out error to begin the frame and Mays followed with a base hit to left that went through the left fielder's legs, allowing Stacey to come all the way around to score the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the inning, King got the first out on a nice play by Hengesbach, who pounced on a bunt in front of the plate and nailed the runner at first by a step.

McGinnis followed with a bunt single for the Lady Generals before a pop-up to Mays at short and a strikeout put the lid on the double-bubble as FMS improved to 9-0 on the season.

Depth pays

Mays finished 3-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored in game two, while King had two hits in three at bats and drove home one Lady Rocket runner.

King also picked up the win in the circle, striking out eight and walking two Spring Hill batters in five innings of four-hit ball.

"Our pitching has been good all year," said Elmore. "Lainey and Samantha are pitching well and having that depth is the difference between winning just one, or both games tonight."

Hengesbach had one hit and an RBI and Carson Warner had the other hit for FMS in the nightcap.
