On Friday night, the Marshall County Tigers (5-1) reeled off their fourth straight win when they defeated the Shelbyville Golden Eagles 74-60 at home with the help of a dominant third quarter performance.
Shelbyville (2-8) kept pace with MCHS early on and held a 31-27 lead at the break, but the Tigers turned on the afterburners at the start of the second half and used a 31-6 run to open up a 58-37 advantage with 6:48 left in the fourth quarter before claiming the 14-point victory.
Bolstered by a 17-of-29 shooting performance in the second half, Marshall County shot 46 percent (27-of-59) from the field overall, which included a 5-of-15 effort from three-point range. The Tigers also outscored the Golden Eagles 15-5 at the foul line, committed only 10 turnovers, and outrebounded Shelbyville 37-34.
Better half
"We played better in the second half and did a good job of pushing the basketball and getting to the rim," said MCHS coach Adrian Wilson. "We haven't shot the ball well from the perimeter this year, but we made some big shots in the second half. I'm proud of our effort because Shelbyville is a good team. Their record doesn't really reflect how good they are."
Point guard Chris Walker led three Tiger players in double figures by pouring in a season high 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Malek Sain followed Walker with 17 points, and Aaron Hobbs tallied 14 points. Darious McKenzie, Curtis Keiler, and D'Andre Brown notched eight, six, and five points respectively for Marshall County as well, while Kasey Pleas and Jay Howard chipped in two points apiece.
The Golden Eagles finished with 26 field goals on 42 percent shooting, but hit just 3-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc and committed 18 turnovers.
Devonta Leslie paced Shelbyville with 24 points, while Dallas Castleman added 11 points. Brayden Ward, Malik Trollinger, and Detrell Carpenter also notched seven, six, and five points respectively for the Golden Eagles.
Feast and famine
The Tigers raced out to a 12-3 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to four points from Hobbs and baskets from Pleas, Walker, and Brown, but Shelbyville quickly counterpunched and rattled off 14 straight points to seize a 17-12 advantage early in the second period.
Marshall County then outscored the Golden Eagles 15-10 over the next 5:17 with the aid of five points from Walker and a pair of treys from Sain and Keiler to tie the game at 27-27 before Castleman tallied the final four points of the half on a offensive put back and a layup to give Shelbyville a 31-27 lead at the break.
The Golden Eagles lead quickly evaporated at the start of the second half, as the Tigers opened the third quarter with a 10-4 spurt on the strength of four points from Walker and baskets from McKenzie, Sain, and Hobbs to pull ahead 37-35 midway through the stanza.
Winning run
After Carpenter scored on a layup to knot the contest at 37-37, Marshall County put down the hammer and went on a 21-0 run behind five points from Sain, four points from McKenzie, and a Keiler three to forge a 58-37 lead early in the fourth period.
Shelbyville notched 10 straight points to whittle the deficit to 58-47 with 5:25 left, but the Tigers outscored the Golden Eagles 16-13 the rest of the way with the help of seven points from Walker and four points from Sain to cap their 74-60 triumph.
