Despite a valiant pitching performance from senior hurler Matt Sharp, the Marshall County Tigers saw their season come to an end on Friday afternoon, as they suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 road loss to defending Class AA state champ Goodpasture in the Section round of the playoffs.
Playing in a steady drizzle for much of the contest, the Tigers (23-9) held a 1-0 lead through the first four and a half innings of play and appeared they might rain on the Cougars' parade.
Marshall County, however, was unable to hold off Goodpasture (33-3) down the stretch, as the Cougars tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1 before scratching out another run in the sixth inning to escape with the hard fought victory.

Three-hitter
Facing a Goodpasture offense that had averaged nine runs per game in their five previous playoff contests, Sharp kept the Tigers in the contest by limiting the Cougars to just three hits and three walks overall while recording six strikeouts en route to suffering just his second loss of the season.
"Matt pitched a super ballgame and coach (Mike) Reese called a good game. He kept them off balance with his curveball and his changeup," said MCHS coach Steve Reese. "We competed against them and if you take a play away here or there we probably win the game."
Conner Crocker hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for Goodpasture's lone extra base hit of the contest, while Ryan Kemp (1 RBI) and Caleb Wilson both singled.
Offensive slump
Having scored a total of only six runs in their last three games, the Tigers were unable to break out of their recent offensive funk and mustered just two hits and a walk against Cougar starting pitcher Drew Hall and reliever J.P. Brenzie.
Grayson Wiles (1 RBI) and Dylan McKnight each had one hit for the Tigers.
Hall picked up the victory on the mound after yielding one unearned run in six innings of work. Brenzie then came in and pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the save.
Marshall County had a chance to get on the board early when they put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the first inning thanks to a Sharp walk and a Goodpasture error, but Hall retired the next two MCHS batters on a strikeout and a groundout to snuff out the threat.
Sharp then worked around a leadoff single by Kemp in the bottom of the second inning with the help of a 4-6-3 double play before holding the Cougars hitless over the next two frames.
Tigers score
The Tigers finally snapped the scoreless tie by pushing across a run in the top of the fifth to grab a 1-0 lead. After Chandler Harmon reached first on an error, courtesy runner Zack Gordon advanced to third on a Houghton sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by Hall while Houghton reached first on the play. Gordon then scampered home on a RBI bunt single by Wiles.
The Cougars would quickly erase the deficit, as Crocker belted a solo homerun over the right field fence in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at 1-1.
The Cougars then broke the stalemate by tallying another run in the sixth inning to seize a 2-1 advantage. Following a leadoff walk by Alex Junior, Wilson beat out a bunt single to put men on first and second with no outs. After both runners moved up 90 feet on a Carter Wiseman sacrifice bunt, Sharp intentionally walked Jay Rhoten to load the bases with one out before Kemp plated Junior with a sacrifice fly.
That proved to be all the runs Goodpasture would need, as Brenzie retired MCHS in order in the top of the seventh to secure the win for the Cougars.
