The Marshall County Tigers made the trek down Highway 31A to the den in Pulaski Tuesday night to face their archrival Bobcats in a big District 12-AA matchup.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead then withstood a late Bobcat charge to sweep the season series with a 76-67 victory at the Hardin-Mayfield Gymnasium.

The Tigers had four players in double digits in the scoring column with Omarion Alred leading the way with 24 points and Bryson Hughes added 20.

Devonte Davis and Kaamil Hazel had 10 points apiece and Silas Hurt and Jayden Hurt had six points apiece for MCHS.

The Bobcats controlled the tip, but could not convert and Kaamil Hazel sank a mid-range jumper to put the Tigers up 2-0.

Alred put the Tigers up 5-0 with a 3-pointer from deep in the corner before Giles County’s J.C. Brown made a basket to put the Bobcats on the board, trailing 5-2.

Hughes put-back his own missed shot for the Tigers to make it 7-2 before Brown laid in a basket on a breakaway that made the score 7-4.

Hughes sank a basket off a great assist from Hazel and on the next Tigers’ possession, Hughes canned a 3-pointer from the corner to make the score 12-4.

Alred sank two more baskets and MCHS was off and running.

Hazel scored another basket, Davis joined the scoring parade, Hughes sank another 3-pointer, and at the end of the first quarter the Tigers led 24-14.

The second quarter saw Alred continue his scoring assault as he swished another deep 3-pointer, made a free throw, and sank three more baskets for 17 points in the first half.

Brown scored eight points and Jake Cardin added five points to help the Bobcats from falling further behind.

Hughes scored on a jump shot as the second quarter wound down and the MCHS lead was 12 points at 39-27 as the teams headed to the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter saw Hurt and Davis carrying the load with three points each as they were able to extend the lead to 15 points at 61-45.

The fourth quarter saw the Tigers maintaining their lead until with 3:00 left in the game when foul trouble by MCHS gave the Bobcats life as they began shooting and making free throws to close the gap to nine points at 71-62.

Brown made a basket to cut the lead to seven, but a steal and a basket by Hurt boosted the lead back to nine points at 73-64 with one minute left in the game.

Cardin drilled a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six points with 42 seconds left in the game before a free-throw by Davis and a basket by Alred sealed the deal and the Tigers walked off the court with a victory and a regular season sweep of the Bobcats.

“We need to learn how to close out a game better, with our foul trouble we allowed them (Bobcats) to get back in the game,” MCHS coach Lavon King said. “Our guards played well and we were able to get the victory.”
