Posted 4/18/17

The Marshall County Tigerettes entered Thursday night’s match-up with 3A Shelbyville Central in the grips of a four-game losing streak as they struggle for offense, having scored just five runs during the time span.

While the offensive woes continued against the Golden Eaglettes, the Tigerettes defense remained solid by allowing a single run in a 1-0 pitching duel loss in Bedford County.

Marlee Woodward turned in arguably her best pitching performance of the regular season by throwing a complete game with a game-high 23 first pitch strikes.

Woodward struck out three and walked one batter, but a fifth inning run by Shelbyville was the difference in the ballgame.

Her counterpart on the mound, Kendall Durard threw seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits, striking out six and issuing one base on balls.

The Tigerettes put the tying run on board to start the bottom of the seventh inning when Leah Hollingsworth beat out the throw to first for an infield single.

The speedy shortstop advanced to second base on a steal, before a Hannah Shepard bloop single allowed Hollingsworth to advance towards home, but the throw to the plate came first and the out ended the Tigerettes’ shot at a tie.

Shelbyville looked to be the first squad the break the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth inning by loading up the bases, but Woodward forced Trinity Whitaker into a groundout to end the Eaglettes’ threat with the bases loaded.

The Eaglettes finally gained the advantage in the fifth inning as Durard started the frame with a single before stealing second to move into scoring position.

The Shelbyville pitcher advanced home on a Sydnie Johnson fielder’s choice RBI for the only run of the contest.

The two pitchers battled back and forth for the remainder of the contest until the Tigerettes threatened in the seventh inning with Hollingsworth's single.

The Tigerettes have lost five in a row and seven out of eight since going on a three-game winning streak with a win over CPA and two victories in the Zaxby's Invitational.

Unfortunately, the losing streak continued on Monday when the Tigerettes lost 7-6 at Spring Hill.

MCHS was postponed at Page yesterday and hosts Giles County tomorrow at Reese Hambrick Field in Lewisburg with the first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
