Spring Hill (4-6, 4-3 District) snapped the Marshall County Tigerettes' three-game winning streak on Monday night when they defeated MCHS 5-1 in Lewisburg to earn a split of the regular season series.
Marshall County (8-5, 6-2 District) had won the last four meetings against the Lady Raiders, which included an 8-1 victory on March 12, but were unable to solve Spring Hill starting pitcher Haley Perryman on Monday, as the sophomore hurler limited the Tigerettes to just three hits in the contest while issuing no walks.
'One of best teams'
"She was hitting her spots and moving the ball around well. We made some really good defensive plays on some hard hit balls too," said Lady Raider coach Christin Glenn. "This is a huge win for us. It gives us a winning record in the league and a win over one of the best teams in the league."
Ashton Watkins doubled and drove in a run to account for MCHS' lone extra base hit of the game, while Mecia Reed and Katie Crabtree both singled.
"Spring Hill has gotten a lot better since we've played them, but we didn't perform at all offensively," said Marshall County coach Holly Cook. "We're going to have to do a lot of hitting in the batting cage and come back with a new mentality at the plate."
Pitchers
Tigerette starting pitcher Jacey Perryman suffered the loss in the circle and yielded five runs over six innings on eight hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts. Grace Medley came on in relief of Perryman and notched one strikeout in one perfect inning of work.
Angelina Martinez and Haley Perryman both tallied two hits to lead Spring Hill's offensive attack with Martinez driving in two runs. Kristin King (3 RBI), Brooke Yokley, Bailey Loveless, and Alexis Harper each had one hit for the Lady Raiders as well.
Spring Hill grabbed the momentum early by pushing across two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Following a leadoff single by Haley Perryman, Taylor Blatt was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Jacey Perryman retired the next two Lady Raider batters on pop outs, but Martinez laced a two-run double into the left centerfield gap to put Spring Hill on top.
The Lady Raiders then plated two more runs in the fourth inning to open up a 4-0 advantage. After loading the bases with no outs on a Martinez double, a single by Loveless, and a Harper walk, King smacked a two-run single into centerfield.
Single score
MCHS got on the board in the bottom of the fourth and plated one run in the frame to trim the deficit to 4-1. Morgan Moyers and Austyn Whaley both reached base on errors to put runners on first and second with one out, before Watkins drove in Moyers with a two-out RBI bloop double.
In the top of the sixth, Spring Hill tacked on an insurance run when Harper scored on a sacrifice fly by King after leading off the inning with a double and advancing to third on a wild pitch.
Marshall County tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh and put runners on second and third thanks to a pair of two-out singles by Reed and Crabtree and a passed ball, but Haley Perryman retired the next Tigerette batter on a groundout to secure the victory for the Lady Raiders.
