Tigerettes off to hot start of regular season

LEWISBURG — There were plenty of theatrics in Tuesday night’s home opener for the Marshall County Tigerettes.
Marshall County supplied plenty of offense, but had to survive a seventh-inning surge by Spring Hill as the Tigerettes held on for a 13-11 win over the visiting Lady Raiders to open the home slate on Tuesday night.
In the top of the seventh, trouble brewed for the home team as Spring Hill went on to plate four runs.
Spring Hill collected back-to-back singles to start off the seventh and followed with an error and a two RBI double.
Even with an error and a walk, the Tigerettes were able to minimize the damage and thanks to an earlier barrage of offense, hang on for the win.
In total, the Tigerettes belted out a whopping 14 hits and were led by Demiyah Blackman and Haylee Hobby on the night.
Blackman went 4-for-4, including a triple, and drove home three runs.
Kaniyah Taylor and Haylee Hobby also drove in three runs apiece, with Hobby mashing a solo home run in the five-run fifth inning.
Mallory Woodward also clubbed an RBI triple in the inning as well.
From the pitcher’s circle, it was a collective effort that saw Courtney Lynch, Brookelyn Nunley and Hobby split efforts on the night.
Lynch went 3 1/3 innings and struck out two, while giving up six runs.
Hobby pitched three innings and struck out two against four hits and gave up five runs, only one of which was earned.
Nunely pitched 2/3 of an inning and didn’t allow a run to cross the plate.
The Tigerettes will be back on the road on Thursday night and travel to Coffee County for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

LAWRENCEBURG — The Marshall County Tigerettes opened the season with a big win at Lawrence County, thanks in no small part to the efforts of senior second baseman Mallory Woodward.
Woodward went 4-for-4 in the opener and drove home three runs as the Tigerettes handed Lawrence County a 10-6 loss in the opener.
Marshall County wasted no time jumping on the Lawrence County pitching staff, with Courtney Lynch singling in her first at-bat of the regular season.
She later scored on a sac-fly by Demiyah Blackman and the Tigerettes padded their lead with a RBI double by Kaniyah Taylor.
Marshall County later doubled its lead with another two-run inning in the third, with Lynch and Woodward connecting on back-to-back singles to lead off the frame.
Lynch scored on Woodward’s single and Blackman recorded her second RBI of the night, driving home Woodward on a double to right.
Lawrence County eventually was able to put runs on the board and got one back in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth and one in each of the final three innings.
The Tigerettes made sure the late-game surge couldn’t threaten the lead with a three-spot in the top of the sixth.
In total, three of the Tigerettes hits went for extra bases, with Taylor recording a triple and a double to go with Blackman’s third-inning double.
Haylee Hobby went the distance in the pitcher’s circle and minimized the damage by the Lawrence County bats.
She gave up 12 hits, but only allowed five earned runs to cross the plate, while striking out three.
