The Marshall County Tigerettes, who earned a first-round bye for the upcoming District 12-AA Tournament with a second place finish, still had some important business to finish up Wednesday night in Giles County.
"We have got second place and the game quote and quote did not mean anything, but it meant a lot to us to come out here and play solid ball and knock them off from being undefeated in the district," said Marshall County coach Heather Denton.
Revenge factor
The Tigerettes' goal was to avenge a 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Lady Bobcats on April 9 and not allow its archrival to post an undefeated regular-season record.
Denton's squad brought out the heavy lumber, banging out 11 hits in the contest with four players posting two hits apiece with Grace Medley, Kenzie Anderson and Sydne Solomon going 2-for4, while Mecia Reed went 2-for-3 in the 5-2 regular-season finale win.
Medley picked up the win in the circle for the Tigerettes, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking one Giles County batter.
Out of jams
Giles County had base runners in every inning except the sixth as Medley worked her way out of six two-out jams on five ground ball outs and one infield pop-up.
"Grace kept the ball down and low, which is her strong suit and she let her defense work, so I was very proud of her and her role on the mound," said Denton.
The Tigerettes scored single runs in the first four innings on RBIs by Solomon, Reed, Jacey Perryman and Leah Hollingsworth.
"We came out hitting the ball and again we manufactured runs, we got a runner on second and got a hit, we did that for our first four runs," said Denton.
Late start
Giles County finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Mary Beth Brumit, slicing the Tigerettes' lead in half at 4-2.
Senior shortstop Ashton Watkins, fighting a stomach bug the entire game, knocked in a run in the top of the sixth, making it a 5-2 contest.
Medley set down the Lady Cats 1-2-3 in the sixth and the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before a base on balls and an infield error gave the home team some life.
Undaunted, Medley induced Leslie Sands to ground out to Reed at second base to end the game and ruin Giles County' bid for an undefeated regular season mark.
Senior leaders
"We have five seniors that have worked really hard and they want to pick up those young girls and show them the way and Mecia made a big play at second to end the game and pick her teammate up," said Denton.
The Tigerettes (16-8, 9-2) will play the winner of the first-round Spring Hill vs. Christ Presbyterian Academy game at 5:30 p.m. at Reese Hambrick Field in Lewisburg on Monday.
