After a tough 6-3 loss to host Lawrenceburg in Saturday’s winner bracket final, the Marshall County 13-15 year old all-stars bounced back Sunday with a big 4-1 win over arch rival Giles County in the loser’s bracket final.
Daniel Sellars tossed the first three innings on the mound for Marshall County and only gave up one run before Carson Cheek came to the mound in the top of the fourth and benefited from a four-run bottom of the frame to pick up his second win of the tournament.
Marshall County only had three hits in the contest as Cova Rowland went 2-for-3 and Trey Warner had one hit in three at bats.
Sellars got some early help from his defense as he escaped a bases loaded one-out jam when shortstop Shane Hay snared a line drive missile and threw to Kyrklin Wunderlin at second for an inning ending double play.
Giles County starting pitcher Riley Cardin set down Marshall County 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning and Sellars gave up back-to-back leadoff hits to Reed Owens and Ayden Kelley before setting down the next three batters in a row to squash the threat.
Cardin blanked Marshall County in order again in the bottom of the third inning and Cheek came to the hill in the top of the fourth and kept Giles County in check.
Warner got things revved up in the bottom of the inning when he lashed a leadoff single and stole second base.
Sellars drew a walk before Cardin got a strikeout.
John Morgan Thomas followed with another walk to load the bases before Warner raced home on a wild pitch to tie the game and both of the other runners moved up to second and third.
Rowland stepped in and laid down a perfect bunt to drive in the go-ahead run and beat the throw to first for a base hit.
Rowland promptly stole second base and Wunderlin made it a 3-1 contest when he executed a squeeze bunt that scored Thomas.
An infield error plated Rowland to give Marshall County a three-run lead and Cheek struck out two out of the three batters he faced in the fifth with the third out coming on a gun down at second by Warner, who nailed Cardin trying to swipe the bag.
The game went to the top of the seventh inning and Giles County tried to hang in the contest as they managed to get runners on first and third with one out before a pop-up to Warner at home plate and a comebacker to Cheek at the mound ended the game, setting up a championship game showdown with Lawrence County.
