Sometimes it's just not your day. The Cornersville Bulldogs fell into second place in the District 11-A standings when they lost 16-6 in six innings to fellow conference co-leader Richland on Monday afternoon in Lynnville.

With both teams entering Monday's contest with an 8-0 record in District play, Cornersville got off to a promising start and jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by Neil Davis.

Raiders take over

Things, however, quickly went awry for the Bulldogs after that point, as the Raiders scored four runs in the bottom of the first to pull ahead 4-1 before crossing home plate nine more times in the second inning to open up a 13-1 advantage.

After pushing across four runs in the top of the third with the help of two Richland errors and RBI singles from Jody Sullivan, David Looney, and Tate Lowery to trim the deficit to 13-5, Cornersville tallied another run in the fifth inning thanks to a Tate Lowery RBI single to narrow the gap to 13-6.

Richland (11-7, 9-0 District) then plated a run in the bottom of the fifth on a A.J. Pettus sacrifice fly to push their lead to 14-6 before bringing the mercy rule into effect by scoring two runs in the sixth inning behind a bases loaded walk from Andrew Jones and a Whit Gibson RBI single to cap their 16-6 victory.

Although the Bulldogs actually outhit the Raiders 11-9 overall, Cornersville (10-10, 8-1 District) self destructed for much of the evening, as they committed five errors defensively while their pitching staff issued eight walks and hit six Richland batters.

Rough day

"When you hit them and walk them, you're usually going to get beat. Combine that with the errors that we made and it makes for a long day," said CHS coach Ben Putman. "We didn't quit today though. We didn't play well, but we didn't quit. We continued to fight and scrap and scored a few more runs. If you score six runs, you should win the ballgame."

Tate Lowery paced the Bulldogs at the plate by going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored, while Sullivan (1 RBI) and Tyler Lowery added two hits apiece. Davis (1 RBI), Looney (1 RBI), Jacob Griffis, and Zach Richards each notched one hit for Cornersville as well.

CHS starting pitcher Matt Callender suffered his first loss of the season after allowing nine runs, four earned, over an inning and a third on three hits and two walks to go along with four hit batsmen.

Gibson (2 RBI) and Pettus (1 RBI) both tallied two hits to lead the Raiders offensive attack while Jordan Hale (3 RBI), Drew Abernathy (2 RBI), Nathan Hale (1 RBI), Cody Jordan (1 RBI), and starting pitcher Carson Edwards all had one hit.

Edwards also picked up the victory on the mound and yielded six runs over four and two-third innings on 11 hits and two walks.
