Ms. R. E. “Re” Smith, 98, resident of Columbia, TN, passed away on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022. She was the last surviving sibling of twelve children born to the late Elvin and Sarah (Cantrell) Hargis. She was born in East Tennessee on May 12, 1924. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Lewisburg, TN, and more recently, Pleasant Heights Baptist Church in Columbia, TN. R. E. was known by many for her strong faith, endless positive outlook on life, love of her family, and love of laughter. For many years she cared for her family and worked in her business. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling internationally. She continued to share her memories of her family and her love of travel until she passed.
She is preceded in death by three daughters, Helen Smith, Wilma Jean Wells, and Evelyn Teague; a grandson, Matthew Teague; and a great-granddaughter Asia Wells. She is survived by a daughter, Wanda (Arch) Warren of Columbia and by three sons, Thomas Smith of Guntersville, AL, James Edward “Ed” Smith of Culleoka, TN and Keith (Derenda) Smith of Burns, TN. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express gratitude for the care of R.E. given by The Life Care Columbia.
Bills-McGaugh and Hamilton Funeral Home are assisting the family. No public services are planned at this time. A celebration of life event will be scheduled soon for the family.
