Powerful Vikings roll over Rockets

The sixth-ranked Community Vikings marched into Chapel Hill Tuesday night and ran over the Rockets via a 79-47 District 12-AA win.

Community (24-1, 7-0) has won 11 games in a row and its only loss was a 69-66 setback to Ardmore, Alabama in the Richland Christmas Tournament.

“Community is a really good team, a veteran team,” Forrest coach Corey Bishop said. “All five starters have been starting for the past three years.”

“They took their lumps as sophomores and freshmen, but they are now starting to see some good results this year.”

The Vikings’ dynamic inside duo of Kobe Pride and Corde Lane have been hard to stop all season and they combined for 27 points versus the Rockets with Pride leading Community with 17 points and Lane had 10.

“They definitely are a problem with Lane and Pride down low, you kind of have to pick your poison on whether or not you want to stop their inside game or stop their guards from making the three ball,” Bishop said. “Community does a good job of playing their game and style.”

Will Reed (12) and Jackson Bailey (11) were also in double figures in the scoring column.

Elijah Pope had nine points, Tyrese Eady scored eight, Alex Mitchell netted seven, and Evan Petrie rounded out the scoring for the Vikings with five points.

Forrest’s Cameron Curtis had 21 points to lead all scorers in the contest.

Curtis also had three 3-pointers and went 7-for-9 from the free throw line.

Cole Villazon had eight points and two treys, Hunter Bennett had a pair of 3-pointers for six points, Walker Herring scored four, and Cole Perryman, Spencer McCown, Tayton Swift, and Connor Lewis all had a deuce.

The Vikings were red-hot to start the game, outscoring Forrest 15-0 until Villazon came up with a steal and score with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Community kept pouring it on and led 26-6 at the end of the period.

“If you can survive the first quarter against them, it can make things a whole lot easier for you, but, if you get down to them and have to spend so much energy to get back into the game, it makes it very difficult on your team from a stamina standpoint,” Bishop said. “They want to push the ball in transition the whole game.”

A 10-5 Community run to start the second quarter increased the lead to 25 points and Forrest got as close as 19 on a Curtis 3-pointer to make it 37-18 before Community took a 43-20 lead to the locker room at the half.

The Vikings essentially put the game away in the third period, outscoring Forrest 22-13 and led by 32 points at the end of the quarter.

Both squads scored 14 points in the final period as the Vikings completed the regular season sweep over the Rockets.

“Our team comes to work every day in practice and games with a good attitude,” Bishop said. “I take it upon myself as their head coach to put them in better situations for them to succeed.”

“I need to be doing a better job as we are getting closer to tournament time.”

Community travels to Nolensville (9-14, 4-3) on Friday while the Rockets host Marshall County (8-12, 2-5) in an intra-county rivalry game.

“Both of us are good teams that are very similar in styles,” Bishop said. “We are looking forward to the challenge of playing them again and I'm sure they are as well.”

“We have to make sure that we take care of the ball and do a better job on the defensive end.”

Forrest (3-21, 1-6) beat the Tigers 54-47 at Lewisburg on January 21.
