Once beaten Vikings pillage Tigers in district tussle

Posted 2/5/20

Friday night’s second game pitted the MCHS Tigers against the number-seven ranked and once-beaten Community Vikings in a key District 12-AA matchup.

The Tigers, despite trailing by only five points at the end of the first quarter could not keep up with the twin oaks of 6’7’’ Kobe Pride and 6’8” Corde Lane, who along with their hot shooting guards rolled to a lopsided 101-47 win.

“We’ve lost two in a row, but hopefully we find a way to play as a complete team tomorrow (Saturday) night against Franklin County,” MCHS coach LaVon King said. “I felt we had a good game plan against them (Community) and we played well for the first quarter.”

“We’ve got to score and hope to keep them under 50 points and I like our defense when we score.”

Pride led all scorers in the contest with 23 points for Community and Omarion Alred led MCHS with 16 points.

The first quarter saw the Tigers quicker than the Vikings, but Pride and Lane scored inside to combine for eight points.

The Tigers went ahead 18-17 with 2:20 left in the first quarter when Kaamil Hazel knocked down two 3-pointers and Caneilus Turner added one.

The Viking countered with 3-pointers of their own by Stratton Lovvorn and Will Reed, plus a free throw by Tyrese Eady to lead 24-19 when the horn sounded to end the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Vikings begin to stretch their lead with Pride and Lane dominating inside and Evan Petrie, Reed, and Jackson Bailey contributing with solid outside shooting.

Alred paced the Tigers with nine points in the quarter, but the Vikings built their lead at halftime to 51-30.

The Vikings continued their assault on the Tigers in the third period with Pride scoring seven points, Lane scored had six, and Lovvorn sank two 3-pointers and three free-throws.

Alred and Blake Hardison had 3-pointers for MCHS in the stanza.

The fourth quarter saw the Vikings edging closer to the century mark and they kept firing away before crossing it on bucket by Elijah Pope with less than a minute to play in the game.

Note: Both squads felt no ill effects after losing to Community as they swept Franklin County at the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday night with the girls winning 40-15 and the boys coming up with a 73-55 win.
