The undefeated Mudcats have been taken some tough shots lately amidst the final week of the Marshall County Babe Ruth regular season and survived every time.

Their latest escape came Tuesday night at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field at Lewisburg versus the all-time league championship winners in the Elks.

Comeback halted

The Elks, who dominated the league titles for a decade, tried to knock off the unbeaten Mudcats, but a gallant comeback feel short as the Chapel Hill squad moved to 11-0 on the season.

Unlike their last couple of games, the Mudcats got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning with the big hit coming off the bat of Dustin Brashear, who opened the scoring with a two-run, bases-loaded single.

Elks starting pitcher Grayson Whaley looked like he was going to get out of a two-out, base-loaded jam in the top of the second, but a dropped fly ball sent three unearned runs to the plate, making it 7-0 ballgame.

Elks threaten

Mudcats' starter Lane Allen sailed through the first two innings before some wildness and two fielding errors let the Elks back in the game at 7-4 in the bottom of the third inning.

Chase "Duke" Karaczewski doubled down the left filed line, leading off the top of the fourth inning and would come around to score two batters later on a fielder's choice RBI by Jay Lyons.

Jarvis Lyttle came to the hill in the bottom of the frame and walked four batters with Walker Whaley getting the RBI free pass to make it 8-5.

Mudcats' coach Brian "Chicken Hawk" Eady went to the bullpen and brought in his son Dylan, who got the last out on a line drive to Dylan Pendley at second base.

Stealing away

Chapel Hill failed to score in the top of the fifth and in the bottom of the inning, Grayson Whaley walked to lead off the stanza and went to second base on a single by Devin Aydelott.

The Elks pulled off a double steal and then Whaley stole home on a botched pickoff play, making it 9-6.

Eady got the next out on fly ball to Lyons in center field and the game ended when Jamaria Perkins grounded back to the mound.
