The Forrest Lady Rockets travelled to Cornersville Monday night to take on the Lady Bulldogs in a District 6-A Tournament quarterfinal soccer match.
In a back and forth game that saw both teams scratch and claw, Lady Rockets’ sophomore Justina Mosley slipped in the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes left in the second half to propel Forrest to the semifinals with a 2-1 victory.
The go-ahead goal was nearly saved by Cornersville’s goalkeeper Carline Riddle, but the ball rolled over her upstretched hands to fall into the net.
The Lady Dawgs scored first on a breakaway in the first half when freshman Kennedi Willis broke free and outraced the Lady Rockets for the goal.
The 1-0 lead stood until late in the first half when Forrest eighth-grader Madison Stalnecker scored on a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box, tying the score at 1-1.
The second half saw action all up and down Cornersville’s home field.
The winning goal was setup by a crossing pass that Mosley guided in as she was positioned in front of the Cornersville goal, ready to send the ball into the net to put Forrest up 2-1.
The Lady Bulldogs fought back and with time running short had one more trip to the Lady Rocket’s goal, but the ball would not go in as players for both teams crowded around the goal.
Cornersville team captain Sydney Downs, a senior who played her last game had tears in her eyes when she said, “We wanted it to go in.”
“We had some opportunities but couldn’t capitalize on the breaks we got,” Cornersville coach James Bledsoe said. “We had heckuva season, we had a rough start, but we turned it around, even though we didn’t get the victory today.”
The Lady Bulldogs graduate four seniors – captain Sydney Downs, Abigail Hinds, Makayala Franklin, and Bethany Fitzgerald.
The Lady Bulldogs (4-8-4) beat Forrest for the first time since 2011 when they travelled to Chapel Hill and came away with a 2-0 win on October 3.
The remainder of the district tournament is at Forrest where the Lady Rockets took on Cascade in the semifinals on Tuesday. Community and Huntland squared off in the other semifinal matchup.
