PULASKI, Tenn. -- After posting one of its most successful athletic seasons in school history, Martin Methodist proved it was the top athletic program in the TranSouth Athletic Conference as it claimed the league's final All-Sports Trophy, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
The RedHawks finished with a 35.0 points total to claim the school's first ever All-Sports title. Bethel (Tenn.) University accumulated a total of 34.5 points to finish runner-up.
"We have long dreamed of winning the TranSouth Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophy," Martin Methodist President Dr. Ted Brown said in a statement. "This has been a highly competitive group of institutions and our coaches and student-athletes have had to work incredibly hard to reach this level of success. But to achieve this victory in the closing year of the TranSouth Conference is truly bitter-sweet. We will miss our association with our TranSouth Athletic Conference colleagues, but look forward to continuing this winning tradition in the Southern States Athletic Conference next fall."
Martin Methodist claimed or shared a total of four conference championships during the 2012-13 athletic year, winning titles in Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Men's Basketball and Women's Tennis. The RedHawks competed in 11 of the league's 13 sports and finished no worse than third place in any season. The RedHawks finished with at least a share of second place or better in 10 of those 11 sports.
Martin Methodist also claimed two TranSouth Tournament championships, taking titles in Women's Soccer and Baseball. In all, a total of three teams qualified for their respective NAIA National Tournaments. Women's Soccer made its ninth consecutive appearance in the national tournament while Men's Basketball clinched its third consecutive and eighth all-time national tournament berth. Baseball, meanwhile, won its first ever TranSouth title and earned the program's first ever trip to the National Tournament.
"We consider it a great honor, reward and moment of recognition to win this year's TranSouth All-Sports Trophy," RedHawks Athletic Director Jeff Bain said. "Our conference has a long history of championships within both the venues and the classrooms. Over the years the competition to earn the points to secure the All-Sports Trophy has be very close and competitive, this year was no exception."
"We are very proud to be acknowledged for the 2013 award, in a season where we produced five conference Players of the Year and four conference championship teams. To be considered one of the elite teams of the TranSouth is a great reflection our teamwork campus wide throughout all of our departments and the efforts and leadership of our players and coaches."
The TranSouth All-Sports Trophy is awarded to the program that produces the most success during the school year in all sports. Points are awarded for how each team finishes in the regular season standings in each sport. Then, the point total for each school is divided by the number of sports the school participated to reach the average. The TranSouth sponsors 13 sports, but only seven sports met the four team participating requirement to count toward the All-Sports standings.
