It was snowy and frigid, but the show went on Friday night and the LMS Tigers persevered, icing the Spring Hill Generals 7-5 in their season opener at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Field in Lewisburg.
First year LMS head coach Frank Musgrave said after the game, "We started out good at 1-0, but they got ahead of us there and we got a little worried about, but we than we started to swinging the bat a little bit better, got some guys on base and really had some guys come through for us."
The win kept intact the amazing unbeaten streak for LMS, who have not lost a sporting event this season after winning championships in both football and basketball with unblemished records.
'High expectations'
"They said they were going to have high expectations for me and I have high expectations for the boys," said Musgrave. "They say that rarely will anybody exceed expectations, but they will usually meet them. Want I want the boys to do is win every single game, so hopefully they will meet those expectations."
Jay Howard had two hits in four at bats for LMS and scored three times, while five LMS pitchers did a yeoman's job on the mound with Logan Bailey picking up the win, while Jay Lyons earned the save, facing one batter.
LMS scored first, set up by a two-out single by Howard in the bottom of the third inning.
Howard stole second and came around to score on a Trent Richardson RBI single to center field.
Early deficit
Andy Hale led off the fourth with a base hit for Spring Hill and would trot home two batters later on an infield error by LMS, tying the game at 1-1.
In the top of the fifth, Spring Hill plated three more runs on just one hit as LMS committed two more infield errors, plus three passed balls that added to the 4-1 deficit.
Howard beat out an infield single with one out in the bottom of the fifth and went to second on a balk.
After Richardson drew a walk, Howard came home on a Spring Hill error with Ben Taylor at the plate, making it 4-2.
Catching up
Both runners moved up on the play and Richardson scored on a passed ball to make it 4-3 before Braden Gentry knocked in Taylor on an RBI fielder's choice, knotting the contest at 4-4.
Bailey, who followed Gentry and Taylor on the hill, gave up a one-out hit to Hunter Whitwell in the sixth, but escaped on a pop-up to Richardson at second and a come-backer to the mound.
Kamron Liggett was hit by a pitch to lead off the home half of the sixth and stole second base.
After an LMS strikeout, Howard hit a shot to right that handcuffed the Spring Hill outfielder, making it second and third with one out.
Richardson was intentionally walked to load the sacks full of Tigers before Liggett trotted home on an attempted pickoff play at second base.
In front to stay
Taylor was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases before Gentry knocked in Howard on a fielder's choice RBI and Richardson followed Howard home on an error to make it a 7-4 ballgame.
Knox Barnes came to the hill in the seventh for LMS and got two outs, but walked three Spring Hill hitters and hit one more to make it a two-run ballgame before Musgrave went to Lyons, who got the game-ending grounder back to the mound on his second pitch to earn the save.
"Spring Hill is a good opponent and a tough team, especially after last night's win for them (12-0 over Forrest)," said Musgrave. "I was really worried going in to today, but there wasn't' really no reason to be worried, we finished the game and finished on top. I can't tell you how excited I am right now."
On the mound
Gentry started the game for LMS and pitched two scoreless innings, walking two and striking out two.
Taylor came to the hill in third and pitched 2 1/3 innings, while giving up three unearned runs on one hit, but Taylor walked three Generals and beaned two more.
Bailey entered in the top of the fifth and went 1 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, while whiffing one and walking one.
LMS had four hits in the game with Howard getting two, while Richardson and Nathan Derryberry had one base knock apiece.
Hale had two hits to lead Spring Hill, while Taylor Warwick and Colton Endicott had one hit apiece.
Spring Hill had come off a big 12-0 win over Chapel Hill on Thursday.
