After squeezing out a 7-5 win over Spring Hill in their season-opener, the LMS Tigers had a much easier time against Whitthorne on Monday, blanking their namesakes 10-0 in a five-inning run rule win.

"We got off to a good start tonight, we started swinging the bats in the first inning and it makes it a lot easier when you get eight runs in the first," said LMS head coach Frank Musgrave.

LMS came out smoking, scoring eight first inning runs to seize the game before ending it with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Winner

Brayden Gentry picked up the win on the mound for Lewisburg, giving up the lone hit by Whitthorne in the first inning before putting the clamps on the visitors from Columbia in two innings of shutout ball, including three strikeouts and one base on balls.

Ben Taylor followed Gentry to the hill and blanked Whitthorne in the third inning, hitting a batter and whiffing one.

Logan Bailey took over on the mound in the fourth inning, striking out three, and walking two purple clad Tigers in two innings of work, closing out the contest for the undefeated LMS (2-0) squad.

"We actually ended up going with the same rotation we had the other night and Knox (Barnes) was ready to go if we were going to go one more inning, but it didn't have to come to that since we finished it in five."

Taking advantage

Whitthorne was in a generous mood to begin the game, unable to execute on defense and Tigers took advantage in the bottom of the first, scoring eight times on just two hits.

Jay Howard reached on a pair of errors in the inning and came around to score both times.

LMS sent a dozen batters to the dish, including Trent Richardson, who reached on an error, scored a run, and had an RBI base hit his second time around in the order.

Taylor had an infield base knock from the number three hole and scored a run, while Gentry, Bailey (RBI), and Brett McGehee all scored after receiving free passes from Whitthorne starter Jenson Pettiway.

Jacob Autry came through with a fielder's choice RBI in the frame and Austin Wood scored a run after reaching on a Whitthorne miscue in the field.

Defense shines

LMS was also solid on defense, committing just one error on a windblown pop-up.

Lewisburg put the cap on the contest in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with a Kamron Liggett leadoff walk and a stolen base.

After an LMS strikeout, Richardson doubled to drive in Liggett and Taylor followed with the game clinching single to center field.
