On Monday night, the Marshall County Thunder fell into the loser's bracket of the 15-year old Babe Ruth District tournament after losing 11-1 to Lawrence County in five innings at Sam Davis Park in the second round of the tourney.

Although he issued five walks and hit a batter, Lawrence County starting pitcher Austin Odom proved to be effectively wild and limited Marshall County to just one hit in the contest.

One hit

Threat ended

Derrick McKnight singled to account for the Thunder's lone hit of the game, while Madison Peete, starting hurler Ethan Poteete, Stuart Warner, Bryce Wunderlin, and Ethan Evans each drew a walk.

Lawrence County, meanwhile, pounded out 10 hits against three Marshall County pitchers to go along with two walks and five Thunder errors.

Odom had a big day at the plate as well and helped his own cause by going 3-3 with three doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Colby Deuchelle (two RBI) and Brock Vaughn (one RBI) also tallied two hits apiece for Lawrence County, while Lucas Ray (two RBI), Jordan Burdette (one RBI), and Kirk Kemp each had one hit.

Poteete suffered the loss on the mound and allowed five runs, two earned, over an inning and one- third on four hits and a walk.

Odom snuffed out a Marshall County scoring threat in the top of the first inning with the help of a 5-3 double play before Lawrence County pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the frame thanks to three errors, a Vaughn single, a passed ball, a sacrifice fly by Jackson Ferguson, and an Odom RBI double to take a 3-0 lead.

After the Thunder left a man in scoring position in the top of the second, Lawrence County plated two more runs in the bottom of the inning to open up a 5-0 advantage. Following a bloop double by Deuchelle, Brody Howard was hit by a pitch and Vaughn drew a walk to load the bases with one out before Ray laced a two-run single into left field.

Marshall County trimmed the deficit to 5-1 by tallying a run in the top of the third. Peete drew a one-out walk prior to stealing second and advancing to third on a Wilson Limbaugh groundout. Odom then issued a walk to Poteete before Peete scored on a successful double steal.

Response

Lawrence County mounted an immediate response and stretched their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third when Odom came home on an RBI groundout by Deuchelle after belting a leadoff double and advancing to third on a Kemp groundout.

Odom then worked around a pair of walks in the top of the fourth before Lawrence County brought the mercy rule into effect by crossing home plate five times in the bottom of the fifth on the strength of an RBI double by Odom, a Deuchelle RBI single, an RBI single by Burdette, a Howard sacrifice fly, and an RBI single by Vaughn to cap their 11-1 triumph.
