Forrest traveled to Moore County Thursday night to take on their toughest foe over the last several years and the Lady Rockets blasted the Raiderettes 13-0 in five innings for their 14th win in a row.
It was the largest margin of victory for Forrest (26-1, 7-0) over Moore County (9-9, 6-2) since a 13-0 win on March 17, 2005 at Lynchburg.
Senior Samantha King, making her final appearance in Lynchburg was masterful in the circle, giving up just two hits, walking none and striking out seven Raiderettes’ batters in the contest with a perfect mix of solid fastball location and a devastating change-up that kept Moore County off balance the entire game.
“It feels really good, I’m glad we just came out and did our jobs and that’s what I told everybody was to keep playing just like we have been at the tournaments,” King said. “I kept wanting to throw that changeup because I was really confident in it today.”
Chapel Hill also had a huge night at the dish, banging out 15 hits with Carson Warner and Laura Mealer leading the way with identical 3-for-4 performances at the plate and 2RBI.
“I think as long as we keep our bats going we will go far,” Warner said. “We are a good team, on and off the field, we are really bonded together.”
Ally Blanton also had a big game, going 2-for-2 with a two runs scored, an RBI, and a perfect sac bunt that set up another run scored.
Kennedy Gillespie also had two hits, a run scored, an RBI, a base on balls and a stolen base, while the speedy Zoe Long had one hit, scored three times and stole two bases.
Forrest wasted little time putting Moore County behind the eight-ball, sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and scoring five runs.
Katlin Leverette and Jasmine Runk drew back-to-back walks to start the game before Carson Warner, King, Mealer, and Kennedy Gillespie drove home the five runs with base hits.
In the home half of the first, King whiffed the first Moore County batter with her change-up and also struck the next batter swinging to set the tone for the game as Moore County did not respond with any runs.
There was no scoring in the second inning, but in the top of the third, Forrest added three more runs on an Emma Stacey two-run double and an RBI two-bagger by Leverette.
King struck out two more Moore County hitters in the bottom of the inning and Mealer drove home a run in the top of the fourth to make it a 9-0 ballgame.
Delaney Stevens led off the home half of the inning with a base hit for the Raiderettes, but King retired the next three batters in order to send the game to the fifth inning.
The Lady Rockets continued their hot hitting in the frame, coming up with four runs on four hits, including a Warner RBI single, a Mealer two-bagger that knocked in one and a run scoring triple by Ally Blanton.
King ruled the circle in the bottom of the inning, striking out the side in order to end the run-rule contest.
Forrest will not be back in action until Tuesday when they host MTCS at 5 p.m. on the Field of Dreams in Chapel Hill.
