The Forrest Lady Rockets continued their late season surge Tuesday night at Chapel Hill with a 62-33 blowout win over District 12-AA foe Community.

“Tonight we came out focused on our defensive assignments and we didn’t let them get any open three’s,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “We pressured their guards so they couldn’t feed the post, so we played a really good game from top to bottom.”

It was the fourth win in a row for the Lady Rockets, who had four players in double figures in the scoring column.

Ally Blanton led the way with 16 points and two 3-pointers, plus a perfect 8-for-8 effort from the free throw line.

Laura Mealer was next with 14 points, a pair of 3-pointers, and a 2-for-2 night from the foul line.

Carissa Curtis and Jaide Langley had 13 points apiece with both throwing down one 3-pointer.

“Tonight we had four players in double figures and scoring the ball in the open floor is her (Langley) strength,” Jean said about Langley’s great effort in the game. “She is doing a great job of passing the ball and she is having a great year as far the assist/turnover ratio, she is almost three and a half to one.”

Forrest jumped all over the Viqueens from the outset of the contest, outscoring Community 12-0 to start the game.

“If we score early, it helps a lot, because then if teams want to play a zone, they have to come out and get us,” Jean said.

Langley buried a 3-pointer to get things going and Curtis came up with a steal and score off the press.

After a Community missed shot, Langley scored again and Mealer swiped the rock and made one free throw to make it 8-0 and force a Community timeout with 5:51 remaining in the first period.

After the stoppage, Mealer buried her second free throw and the press forced another turnover that led to a Blanton 3-pointer to make it 12-0.

Community finally got on the scoreboard at the four minute mark of the period on a Jesa Moore basket.

The Viqueens fought back, going on an 8-3 mini-run to cut the deficit to 15-8 before a Mealer 3-pointer and a rebound and put-back by Shea Lewis stretched the lead back to 12 points.

Two made free throws by MJ Simmons at the end of the first quarter made it a 20-10 contest.

The only scoring in the first four minutes of the second period was by Mealer on a field goal and another 3-pointer, giving the Lady Rockets a 25-10 lead.

The Forrest press did heavy damage late in the period on back-to-back steal and scores by Curtis and a pretty backdoor play with Curtis scoring again to cap off a 6-0 run and give the Lady Rockets a 31-15 lead at the half.

Forrest put the game away in the first five minutes of the third quarter, putting together a backbreaking 12-3 run to stretch its lead to 25 points at 43-18.

Langley started the run with a pretty pull-up jumper and Blanton ended the burst with two made free throws.

Community scored just two more points the remainder of the third period, while Blanton buried a late trey to give Forrest a 46-20 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Viqueens had no answer in the fourth period as the Lady Rockets (17-7, 3-4) cruised to the 29-point win and they await a huge intra-county rivalry match-up Friday night versus the Marshall County Tigerettes (15-5, 5-2) at Chapel Hill.

“I tell the girls all time, the biggest game of the year is always the next one, whether it’s Marshall County or Moore County,” Jean said. “There is always somebody coming out on the floor trying to beat you, so you just have to strap it up and go play and if we play like we did tonight we have a chance to win.”

Forrest has climbed out of the basement in the District 12-AA standings, winning three league games in a row after a 0-4 start, while the Tigerettes maintain a solid hold on second place, leading both the Lady Rockets and the Viqueens by two games.
