The number-eight ranked Nolensville Lady Knights invaded the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium for a showdown for first place in District 12-AA with the Marshall County Tigerettes in Tuesday’s first game of a doubleheader.
Both squads came into the contest with identical 4-0 district records and they proceeded to put on a defensive show with Nolensville coming away with a 37-27 victory and sole possession of first place.
“It was a great game defensively by both teams,” MCHS coach David Steely said. “We need to take better care of the ball to beat a good team like Nolensville.”
The Lady Knights’ six-foot Zoe Piller is an imposing figure in the low post, but foul trouble limited her time on the court, so the scoring fell to Sydney Mickulin, who responded with four 3-point baskets to lead Nolensville with 14 points.
Marshall County was led in the scoring column by Kelsey Keiler with 14 points and Dionna Crutcher was also in double figures with 10.
The defensive effort by both squads was evident as baskets were few and far between in the first quarter.
The Lady Knights’ defense shone brightly early in the first quarter when defensive specialist Parker Leftwich stole the ball on consecutive possessions and scored both times.
Crutcher hit a big 3-pointer to tie the score at 6-6 with one minute left in the low scoring first quarter.
MCHS got the ball back with time running down and Keiler let fly a shot that missed, but she promptly rebounded the rock and put it back in as the horn sounded, putting MCHS in the lead 8-6.
The second quarter had barely begun when Piller was guilty of a charge for her third foul and she went to the bench until after halftime.
The Tigerettes could not take advantage as solid defense by the Lady Knights held MCHS in check.
Shots by Mickulin and Grace Baird stretched the lead and a full-court pressure defense gave the Tigerettes a tough time and as the Lady Knights took an 18-14 lead to the locker room at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Lady Knights lengthen their lead by going on a four-point mini-run and Crutcher picked up her third foul.
The defensive pressure continued for the Lady Knights and by the end of the quarter, Nolensville had stretched the lead from four points to nine at 27-18.
The fourth quarter saw Mickulin do more damage as she nailed two more 3-pointers and at the 2:03 mark, Crutcher fouled out and Keiler had to shoulder the load.
Keiler responded by scoring two baskets on drives to the hoop to cut the Lady Knight’s lead to 10 points, but time was not on her or the Tigerettes side as Nolensville protected the ball and their lead to grab first place in the district.
MCHS (13-4, 4-1) travels to Unionville to take on Community (10-13, 2-3) Friday night, while Nolensville (16-4, 5-0) hits the road again to Giles County (9-10, 2-3).
The Tigerettes and Lady Knights will meet again on Valentine’s Day at Nolensville for the regular season district finale.
“I believe that Nolensville is one of the better 2A teams in the state, so we’ve got our work cut out,” Steely said. “We go to Community Friday night in second place in the district and we need to stay there because the district season is half over with.”
