Cornersville’s Lady Bulldogs (12-13) finished up the 2022-2023 regular season last Thursday where they began back in November, against the Lady Warriors (6-17) of Culleoka.
The Lady Bulldogs had won at Culleoka in the first game of the season and were coming off a loss at Moore County last Tuesday night but showed no lingering effects in a 67-39 win.
Alicia Polk led Cornersville with 21 points, continuing her sparkling play since the new year began.
Karlie Jones led Culleoka with 11 points.
Culleoka controlled the tip-off but missed on their first attempt and Polk put Cornersville on the board first with a twelve-footer, 2-0.
Andee Kelley for Culleoka responded with a basket to tie it at 2-2 before Jayli Childress, on a nifty drive through traffic, laid the ball up and in to put Cornersville back in the lead, 4-2.
Polk scored a basket and two free throws for an 8-2 lead, then Culleoka’s Karlie Jones drained a three-pointer to make the score, 8-5.
Emilee Rochester of Culleoka and Anna Wood of Cornersville traded baskets before Ady Gentry, on a nice assist by Wood laid up a basket and Childress added a long three-pointer to stretch the Cornersville lead to eight points, 15-7, at the 1:37 mark of the first quarter.
Culleoka’s Rochester scored the last two baskets of the opening quarter and when the horn sounded Cornersville led, 15-11.
The Lady Warriors closed to 15-14 before Gentry, with a nice assist from Wood, scored down low and Annabelle Mulliniks sank a basket to push Cornersville ahead 19-14.
Culleoka only scored two more points in the second quarter as the Lady ‘Dawgs took control with Polk scoring five points, Childress scoring four points and Wood draining a three-pointer from the corner. Cornersville led 31-16 at the half.
Polk, a senior, shined in the second half as she sank two three-pointers and two baskets for 10 points in the third quarter.
Wood for Cornersville drained another three-pointer, Gentry got loose down low and scored four points and freshman Abigail Finley scored three points as the Lady Bulldogs led at the end of the third quarter, 51-25.
The final quarter saw Cornersville maintaining their lead and also giving a glimpse of future development as freshmen Finley and Anna Walker showcased their talents on the floor. Finley finished the night with eight points, Walker drained a basket for two and the Lady ‘Dawgs came away with a 67-39 victory.
