Lady Bears down Forrest 6-2

The Lady Rockets fell 6-2 Wednesday night to Davidson Academy in Chapel Hill as the infield error bug continued for Forrest, who have dropped two in a row for the first time this season.

"Tonight was a little better effort than last night, but we don't want to start this losing habit," said Forrest head coach Becky Cheatham. "We have got to stop the mental discourse and get focused."

Bad beginning

On the first play of the game, a three-base error in the Forrest infield set the tone. The Lady Bears (17-3) scored off the Forrest miscue and added another run on an RBI base hit by Hannah Hoover to take a two-zip lead right off the bat.

"That was not a good way to start and I knew we were in trouble when that happened," said Cheatham. "We cannot continue to perform like this and expect to be successful."

In the bottom of the second, Forrest threatened on a Savannah Brothers base hit to left and a bunt single by Kiyoko Puca, but Davidson Academy hurler Savannah Carr escaped on an inning-ending groundout to shortstop.

The top of the third started on another error at the second base spot and back-to-back singles by Savannah Peek and Darby Rains put the Lady Bears up 3-0.

Comeback

Forrest came back in the home half of the frame as Amanda Patterson led off with a walk and one out later, Jessica Harmon reached on an infield single.

After nice play at second base by Rains for out No. 2, Davidson Academy buckled just a bit on a two-run error in the infield, making it 3-2.

Both squads managed single hits in each of their next two at-bats, but no runs crossed the plate as the game went to the sixth inning.

Carr roped a double to lead off the inning, and after an out at first, Forrest let another unearned score on a misguided throwing error to put the Lady Bears up 4-2.

Forrest starter Sara Jordan got the next out on a grounder back to the circle before Mackayla Rembert legged out a bunt single.

Error hurts

Peek made Forrest pay once again for the infield miscue, dropping a two-run single to the outfield as Davidson Academy took a four-run lead to the bottom of the inning.

Carr drilled Brothers with a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning and after a strikeout, Puca beat out another bunt to put runners on first and second.

Kaitlin Toombs followed with an infield single to load the sacks for Forrest, but a pop-up in foul territory near third and a 1-2 force at home ended the Lady Rockets' last real threat of the contest.

Puca finished with a perfect night at the plate in a 3-3 effort, plus a stolen base, while Harmon had three hits in four at-bats and scored a run.

Brothers and Toombs had the only other two hits for Forrest in the game.

'Today helped'

"No doubt today helped us, even though we hate to lose. It was good to see our slappers have such a good game and we got to play some different people," said Cheatham. "Our hitting was better today, we got people in scoring position, but our big hitters didn't come through. We have got to go back and work harder."

Jordan suffered the loss for Forrest (8-3) in the circle, giving up just three earned runs in the contest on eight hits, while striking out three and walking zero.

Carr gave up zero earned runs in the circle for the Lady Bears, while striking out one, hitting one, and walking one Lady Rockets batter.

Rembert, Peek, Hannah Thompson, and Rains all had two hits apiece for Davidson Academy.
