John Edward Cowden, 90, of Petersburg, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at his residence. A native of Lincoln County, Mr. Cowden was the son of the late Leonard Campbell Cowden and Laura Ada Sorrells. John Edward Cowden

John Edward Cowden, 90, of Petersburg, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at his residence.

A native of Lincoln County, Mr. Cowden was the son of the late Leonard Campbell Cowden and Laura Ada Sorrells. Mr. Cowden attended Eastern Kentucky College and the University of Kentucky, was a member of First Baptist Church of Petersburg, served his country as a member of the United States Marines during World War II, and was a farmer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Cowden, and sister-in-law, Jo Ann Cowden.

Mr. Cowden is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ernestine Miles Cowden of Petersburg; one daughter, Rose (Chuck) Wright of Murfreesboro; one son, John Miles (Derrell) Cowden of Petersburg; two grandsons, Tommy (Janna) and Jimmy Cowden; three great-granddaughters, Regan, Brooke, and Bethany Cowden; one niece; two nephews; and several cousins.

Funeral services for Mr. Cowden will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at First Baptist Church in Petersburg, with Doug Brown and James Hickey officiating.

The burial will take place in Old Orchard Cemetery in Petersburg.
