Jack McBath Keny

Jack McBath Keny, 82, died Saturday morning, Aug. 31, 2013, in Lewisburg after a brief illness.

A native of Maryville,Tenn., he was the son of the late Charles and Ruby Keny.

Mr. Keny served in the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952 and was stationed at Fort Devens, Mass.

He graduated from Maryville College in 1955 with a BS degree and received his Masters in Education Administration and Supervision from George Peabody College in Nashville in 1956. While at Maryville College he played both football and basketball and in 1994 was selected to the school's Wall of Fame.

Mr. Keny was a retired educator, having served as Superintendent of Marshall County Schools from 1976 to 1988, after having served as principal at Marshall County High School from 1966 to 1976. Previous to that he had served as teacher/coach at Harriman High School and as principal of Rockwood High School. After serving as Superintendent he went on to work for the Tennessee State Department of Education, retiring in 1996. Following his retirement he served two terms on the Marshall County Board of Education, concluding five decades working in the education profession.

He was a former president of both the Marshall County Education Association and the Marshall County Retired Teachers Association, served as executive secretary of the Tennessee Superintendent Study Council, was a member of the Board of Directors of the South Central Community Service Agency, and was a past Commander of American Legion Post 39.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris Parrish Keny of Lewisburg; one son, Mike (Cheryl) of Lewisburg; three daughters, Susan (Bob) Graham of Brentwood, Julie Brewer of Lewisburg, and Lisa (Jeff) Lee of Franklin; two sisters, Sara Charles Rule and Laura Keny, both of Maryville; and nine grandchildren, John and Kelsey Keny, Will, Rob and Matt Graham, Jack Cathey, and Josh, Adam and Ben Lee.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Mark Irvin and Reverend Leland Carden officiating.

Burial with follow at Lone Oak Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation with the family will be from from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the day of the funeral at London Funeral Home.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers include members of the Marshall County Retired Teachers Association, members of the American Legion Post 39, Director of Schools Jackie Abernathy, and former Superintendents of Schools Frank Edwards, Fred Shelton, Nancy Aldridge, Tony Lancaster, John David Pierce, and Roy Dukes.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Marshall County Retired Teachers, the First United Methodist Church in Lewisburg, or to the general fund of the school of your choice in the Marshall County School System.
