In both of Cornersville’s Class A runner-up years in 2017 and 2018, the Bulldogs beat perennial powerhouse Huntingdon on the way to Cookeville.
The Mustangs got their revenge in the third meeting on Friday night when they blasted the boys from Frog Bottom 54-7 in the second round.
“We knew going in to the game that we would have to play our best football and most of all mistake free football, and we were not able to do that,” Cornersville coach Gerard Randolph said. “Huntingdon controlled the game from the first kickoff and through the majority of the game.”

“They played a really good game against us and they showed why they have been ranked at the top of Class 1A football all season.”
The Mustangs came out of the corral with a purpose, scoring 19 first quarter points and 21 more in the second to put the game away at halftime, 40-0.
“They were able to make a huge play on the opening kickoff return and they returned it inside our 10-yard line and they never let up after that,” Randolph said. “This Huntingdon team is a really good football team, and they are very experienced with 22 seniors. That in itself is very hard to overcome.”
On the other side of the ball, the Bulldogs were not experienced as they lost 19 seniors from last year’s squad, sporting a young team that has shown tremendous growth as the season has worn on.
“We knew coming into this season that the cupboard was not bare, we had a few guys that had played a lot of snaps for us the last couple of years,” Randolph said. “We graduated a bunch of guys last year, and anytime you have the success that we have had the past couple of years it can be a tough act to follow.”
“I think this group gave us everything they had, and we are grateful for that effort throughout the entire season.”
The 2019 graduating class accomplished a feat that will be hard to match in Cornersville, appearing in the playoffs for four straight years.
“That is an accomplishment in itself,” Randolph said. “The blueprint has been laid for next year's group, they have gotten to be a part of three special years.”
Randolph is always a positive person and that attitude rubs off on the program that has posted a 35-7 record the last three years with a back-to-back Class A runner-up finishes, two region titles, and a gaudy 16-1 region mark.
“We as a coaching staff will do everything in our power to get every inch of potential out of next year's squad,” Randolph said. “We look forward to gaining more guys from our really good middle school program, and we look forward to getting them in the weight room this off season and trying to put another successful product on the gridiron next season.”
