Beth Hawn has emerged as the go-to force in the low post this season for the Lady Rockets, and she continued her great early season play by leading the home squad with 16 points as Forrest beat Summertown Saturday night 49-24.
Hawn, who scored 14 in the Lady Rockets' 62-54 victory over Van Buren Friday night, has become the aggressor this season. After the game she tried to explain the change from last season.
"Coach Reasonover jokes with me about the change and says when I started to eat meat, I started to score. It may be true, but I think it is because of all the hard work in practice and the off season. My role is the same as it has always been, to help Gaby (Bussell) and Summer (Waggoner) down low and score when I can."
The Lady Rockets can win games even when they are not clicking on all cylinders by turning up the defensive pressure and scoring points in transition off the miscues. That was the case Saturday night in Chapel Hill as Forrest forced Summertown into nine first-quarter turnovers that led to 10 points and a 14-4 first quarter lead.
Both teams struggled from the field in the second quarter, but Forrest allowed the Lady Eagles to score only six points and led 22-10 at the half.
