The FMS Rockets (12-2, 11-1) are right on track to defend their four-year stranglehold on the Mid-South Baseball Conference, going 4-0 on the road last week to clinch the number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament, beginning on April 6.
"We cannot get satisfied," said FMS head Coach Bart Joyce. "At this time of the year, with a week left in regular season, everyone has to step up their game going into the tournament."
Forrest's unblemished week began with a double-header sweep over the Cascade Champions on Wednesday in Wartrace.
"Anytime you can win two ballgames against a rival such as Cascade it's always huge," said Joyce. "The boys played well all across the board. It was a combined effort on the hill as well as defense and offense."
FMS took game one at Cascade 10-4 before switching at bats as the home team and blasting the Champs 15-5 in the second game of the twin bill.
In game one, Forrest put up single runs in the first, second, and fifth innings, plus three runs each in the third and fourth frames, easily staving off the Champions for the win.
The Rockets managed just six hits in the game, but were helped by 10 Cascade bases on balls, plus 3 Champions' errors in the six-run victory.
Jonathan Lykins picked up the win for FMS on the hill, going 3 1/3 innings before Marshall McKee came on to finish the job in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Jacob Jones went 3-4 (two runs scored, RBI) Dustin Brashear was 2-4 (two runs scored, two RBIs), Luke Cunningham went 1-3 (two bases on balls, three runs scored), and Alex Huey knocked in two runs on a fielder's choice and bases loaded walk.
In game two, the Rockets scored a single run in the top of the first inning, three in the second, six in the third, and five in the fourth to run-rule the Champs in four innings.
Jordan Jent went the distance on the mound to pick up the win, giving up five runs (two earned) on eight hits, while striking out eight and walking three Champion hitters.
Forrest exploded offensively in the contest, banging out 14 hits with Brashear (three RBIs), Lykins (four RBIs), Jaylen Smith (two runs scored), and Marshall McKee (two runs scored) all notching two hits apiece.
Jones went 1-4 with two walks and scored four times, while Cunningham (two runs scored, two RBIs), Jent (two RBIs), Ryan Moses (one RBI), and Lane Allen (one RBI) all had one hit apiece for Forrest.
On Thursday, FMS boarded the yellow bus for the long trip to Huntland and came away with a hard-earned 9-6 extra inning win versus the Hornets.
Forrest led 6-3 before Huntland scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.
The Rockets responded in the top of the eighth, plating three runs on just one hit as they were helped out by six Huntland errors in the frame.
Jacob Jones, who came on for Brashear in the third, pitched five innings to pick up the win and Lykins nailed the save, setting Huntland down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth, including a game ending strikeout.
Brashear went 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored; Huey (1-3) knocked in two runs and scored once, Jones had one hit (HPB, BB) and scored three runs, and Lykins and McKee had one base knock apiece in the game.
It was a Friday night shootout in Fayetteville as both teams combined for 21 runs on 25 hits with Forrest coming from behind to win 11-10.
The Tigers took and early 2-0 lead before the Rockets scored five times in the second to go up 5-2, but Fayetteville came back with one in the second, two in the fourth and one more run in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead, entering the top of the sixth inning.
FMS scored three unearned runs in the inning to take an 8-6 lead, but the Tigers exploded with a four-run bottom of the inning to take a 10-8 lead to the final inning.
The FMS comeback kids were ready to roll and Fayetteville helped them out, committing four errors in the field as the Rockets crossed home plate three times to take an 11-10 lead.
This time it was Jones' turn to earn the save on the mound as he closed the door on Fayetteville in the home half of the seventh, setting down Fayetteville 1-2-3 to close the game and clinch the number one seed.
"We've still got a couple big conference games left and we need to focus on those, but at the same time we're looking forward to a good tournament," said Joyce.
Jent picked up the win on the hill and went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Cunningham, Brashear, and McKee all had three hits in the game, while Huey and Smith managed one base knock apiece.
