After defeating Westwood 11-1 in their season opener, the FMS Lady Rockets posted a 13-3 run rule win over intra-county rival Cornersville on Thursday at the Field of Dreams in Chapel Hill.

"We started working hard from day one and we wanted this one bad," said FMS head coach Bunky Elmore. "But, we have a lot of work to do, the season is still young and we have to keep going and keep improving."

The Lady Bulldogs scored in the top of the first inning as Miranda Cooksey drew a leadoff walk and then went to second on a passed ball.

Madison Hopkins moved Cooksey to third on a ground ball to second before Emily Martin knocked Cooksey in with a 6-3 fielder's choice.

FMS starter Lainey Mays got out of the inning on a grounder to second baseman Piper Elmore.

"We were a little nervous there, but I felt like we would fight back," said Elmore. "I felt like we have good hitters and good defense and we would stay in it."

With one out in the home half of the first, Cornersville starter Briley Bean hit both Kelsey Darnell and Amanda Patterson to put Lady Rockets at first and second.

Bean struck out Taylor Patin before beaning Dani Hoeft to load the sacks.

Elmore came through with a two-run single and Samantha King followed with a laser two-run double to center to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Mays struck out the side in the top of the second and Forrest tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning on a two out RBI double by Patterson that scored Darnell, who had singled.

There was no scoring in the third or fourth innings, and in the top of the fifth, CMS came back to make it a 5-3 ballgame on a two run double by Courtney Darnell.

With one out in the home half of the fifth, Hoeft and Elmore got back-to-back singles and then moved to second and third on a passed ball.

King came up and scorched a double down the leftfield line that scored both runners to make it 7-3.

Cassie Whitworth followed with a single up the middle and Kyleah Hengesbach reached on an error to load the bases.

Mays knocked home King with a base hit and Whitworth came home one batter later on another CMS miscue in the field.

Patterson broke the game wide open with a two-run double to make it 11-3 and Patin made it 12-3 with an RBI single to left field.

Moments later, with Hoeft at the plate, Patterson scooted home on a wild pitch to end the game.

"We hit well all night, had good pitching, and played some great defense behind Lainey," said Elmore. "Every win is sweet, but when it is a county rival, it is even better."
