The Forrest Middle School Lady Rockets (3-0) completed the sweep of a doubleheader against the Cornersville Middle School Lady Bulldogs (2-3) on Monday night by defeating CMS 10-0 on the road in the second game..

Bolstered by a five-run fourth inning, the Lady Rockets finished with nine hits and two walks against CMS starting pitcher Mikaela King to go along with two Cornersville errors.

Jordan Yelensky spearheaded Forrest's offensive attack by going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and 5 RBI. Starting hurler Samantha King added two hits and 2 RBI for the Lady Rockets as well, while Brooke Paul, shortstop Lainey Mays, Morgan Hill, and Madison Curtis each had one hit with Paul driving in two runs.

Strong hitting

"I was very pleased with the way that we hit the ball. Our top five hitters were pretty solid, but the bottom of the order got some timely hits too," said FMS coach Bunky Elmore.

Samantha King also went the distance in the circle for the Lady Rockets to pick up the win and allowed three hits and three walks in five scoreless innings of work to go along with four strikeouts.

Madison Hopkins tripled to account for the Lady Bulldogs lone extra base hit of the contest, while Ali Jones and Jewel Anne Walls both singled.

"Forrest hit the ball hard and ran the bases well. They just outplayed us. Give credit to Bunky because her team came ready to play," said Cornersville coach Eric Crabtree. "We hit some balls hard, but they went right to people. Sometimes the breaks aren't going to go your way."

CMS left two runners on base in the top of the first inning before the Lady Rockets grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the frame when Mays scored on a RBI triple by Yelensky after smacking a leadoff double.

CMS chance

The Lady Bulldogs had another chance to get on the board in the top of the second and loaded the bases with two outs thanks to a Jones infield single and a pair of walks by Bethann Oberlander and Kirsten Young, but Mays caught a line drive by Hannah Singleton to extinguish the Cornersville threat.

Forrest then broke the game open in the bottom of the second by crossing home plate four times in the frame with the help of a CMS error, a single by Curtis, a Paul two-run single, a walk by Mays, and a Yelensky two-run double to open up a 5-0 advantage.

In the top of the third, Hopkins led off the frame with a triple, but Samantha King induced a pop out by Samantha Prosser before the Lady Rockets turned a 5-3-2 double play to keep the shutout intact.

Five-run inning

FMS hung up another crooked number in the bottom of the fourth and pushed across five runs in the inning to stretch their lead to 10-0. After Erin Septer drew a walk and Mays reached base on an error, both base runners moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch prior to scoring on a Yelensky two-run single. Following a bloop single by Hill, Samantha King plated Yelensky and Hill with a two-run double to make it 9-0. Courtesy runner Micayla Feller then advanced to third on a Carson Warner groundout before racing home on a passed ball to cap the scoring in the inning.

Samantha King struck out the side in the top of the fifth to cap the Lady Rockets' victory.
