The Cornersville Middle School Lady Bulldogs (1-1) let a win slip through their fingers on Monday night, as they suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 road loss to the Spring Hill Lady Generals after squandering a late two-run lead.

CMS held a 4-2 lead through the first four and a half innings of play, but Spring Hill (1-0) narrowed the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth before crossing home plate twice in the seventh with the aid of two walks and an error to hand Cornersville their first loss of the season.

The Lady Bulldogs outhit the Lady Generals 7-5 overall, but Spring Hill held a 4-0 edge in walks and was aided by five CMS errors, which led to four of their five runs.

"Whenever you spot a team two base runners by walking them and then have a couple of brain cramps, it's going to hurt you," said Cornersville coach Eric Crabtree. "I thought we outplayed them and outhit them, but we made too many mistakes at the end of the game."

Despite recording five strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings of work, CMS relief pitcher Kirsten Young suffered the loss after yielding three unearned runs during that span on one hit and three walks.

Lady Bulldogs starting hurler Mikaela King had to settle for the no decision and yielded two unearned runs on four hits and a walk over four innings to go along with four strikeouts.

Jewel Anne Walls led the Lady Bulldogs at plate by going 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Emma Mitchell, Young, Hannah Singleton, King, and Courtney Darnell each notched one hit for CMS as well with Mitchell scoring once.

Spring Hill starting pitcher Lily Soverns went the distance in the circle to pick up the victory. Gracyn Martin sparked the Lady Generals offense by going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Sarah Usher, Taylor Price, and Cobi LeCroy also tallied one hit apiece for Spring Hill with LeCroy driving in one run.

The Lady Generals grabbed an early 1-0 lead by plating a run in the bottom of the first inning with the help of a Martin infield single, an error, and a two-out RBI single by LeCroy.

Cornersville then tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when Walls scored on a passed ball after lacing a one-out triple down the right field line.

Spring Hill tallied a run in the bottom of the third on two hits and a CMS error to claim a 2-1 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs crossed home plate three times in the top of the fifth to seize a 4-2 advantage.

Following a one-out single by Darnell, pinch runner Kianna Holder stole second prior to advancing to third on a bloop single by Mitchell. After Walls legged out a bunt single to load the bases with one out, Holder raced home on a wild pitch before Mitchell and Walls both scored when Lady General centerfielder Shelby Secrest misplayed a fly ball by Young.

Spring Hill then plated a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Martin single, a passed ball, and a Cornersville error to trim the deficit to 4-3.

Young worked around a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh when she issued one-out walks to Secrest and Usher. Following a successful double steal by the Lady Raiders, Young struck out Mandy Bennett before Secrest and Usher both scored on a passed ball thanks to a Lady Bulldog throwing error to give Spring Hill the 5-4 victory.
