For the fifth time during the 2017 season, the Lady Bulldogs (14-8) faced Richland, and despite beating the Raiders (9-12) by a combined score of 43-13 the previous four meetings, tensions were high as the loser would go home for the year and the winner would be guaranteed a spot in the region semifinals.

After losing an uncharacteristic 13-0 run-rule loss in the semifinals of the District 11A Tournament to Columbia Academy on Wednesday, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs found themselves in the loser’s bracket against an old familiar foe.

The Raiders were able to hold the Lady 'Dawgs to just three runs over the first two innings before Cornersville exploded for nine runs in the third and ultimately taking a 13-0 win in five innings.

The Bulldogs beat the Lady Raiders by a 30-2 score over two post-season games.

Lady Bulldog hurler Kirsten Young was nearly unhittable as the senior Jackson State commitment gave up just one hit over five innings, while ringing up six Richland batters on 12 first pitch strikes.

Young also led the Bulldogs at the plate with three RBI.

Emma Mitchell turned in four quality at bats with two hits and three RBI, while Hannah Singleton added four quality at bats with two RBI and two walks.

The Raiders held the Bulldogs to just three runs over the first two innings before Cornersville turned the contest into a glorified batting practice in the third inning.

Hopkins started off the inning with a walk, Samantha Prosser went to first after being hit by a pitch and Singleton dropped a single to load the bases with one out.

Sarah Beth Prosser added the first RBI of the inning after being hit by a pitch before Samantha Prosser scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-0.

The next run came on a bad throw from catcher to the pitcher for a 6-0 lead and Payton Salsman, Abbie Woodard, and Singleton all drew walks to add more runs.

Mitchell cleared the bases with a three-run double down the third base line for a 10-0 followed by a Hopkins RBI double into left field for an 11-0 advantage.

Young brought home the last score of the inning with a double deep into the left field gap to bring home Hopkins and the Bulldogs headed into the bottom of the inning with a 12-0 edge.

Cornersville threatened again in the fourth when the younger Prosser started off the frame with a single into left before Woodard took first on a Richland error and Singleton brought home the final run of the contest with a single into right.

The Raiders went down in order in the bottom of the fifth and the Lady Bulldogs secured a region berth for the second straight season.

With the win over Richland, the Lady Bulldogs needed to beat district rival Columbia Academy two straight games to take home the district championship.

And with Young on the mound later in the evening, the Lady Bulldogs came excruciatingly close to the win as Young allowed just two hits and notched four strikeouts in a complete game against Columbia Academy (16-10).

CA scored just two runs in the second inning, but the slim lead proved to be enough as Cornersville was able to add just three hits of its own to drop all four games on the season to its namesakes from Maury County.

Hannah Singleton, Abbie Woodard and Madison Hopkins each drew a hit off CA ace Brittany Adair.
